How is it if diesel is so dirty, the road fund license of my new(ish) car is only £35pa?

Because MPs are clueless idiots not scientists and they believe whatever their simple minds
These same idiots were also told that dirty old diesel is clean.. and they fell for it.

How can you expect MP's to have detailed knowledge on every topic under the sun, they have (well paid) advisors and experts to guide them. They either accept the advice or ignore it but either way they will face criticism.
How can any one be certain the advice from so called experts is correct ? One of many examples being the pension fiasco with people losing part or all of their pensions after listening to so called experts or advisors.

That's easy, just pick an expert that agrees with you.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

Let's put it so simple even a politician can understand it, fuels derived  from digging really deep holes in the ground are polluting, simple as that, so let's ban everything from natural gas to coal... Cool

It is strange the annual MOT test doesn't pick up this alleged overproduction of pollution.

The peak NOx level was about half normal..

If proof was needed that it's not cars that make most of it this is it! It's older dirtier large diesel engines that were never designed with any pollution controls at all. Modern car diesel engines are a minor source of pollution compared to emissions from trucks and buses.
The problem is, society would grind to a halt without them!

That's because if the MoT test actually required emissions to be below totally safe limits, most of the large vehicles would be off the road and the consequences would be serious. It's all a compromise. Do we want a society that is "user friendly" or do we want to go back to hunter-gathering?

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

The nitrogen oxides in the air can be removed by treating roof tiles with titanium dioxide.  The TiO2 acts a catalyst with sunlight to breakdown the gases. At a cost of $5 per new roof it would remove the pollution caused by a car in a year.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

A number of studies have shown that diesel cars, unlike petrol cars, spew out high levels of what are known as nitrogen oxides and dioxides, together called NOx.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is particularly nasty - recent studies have shown it can cause or exacerbate a number of health conditions, such as inflammation of the lungs, which can trigger asthma and bronchitis, and increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

Many petrol engines also produce high levels of NOx, Gas and oil fired central heating boilers produce NOx, power stations fueled by coal, oil and gas produce NOx, most processes burning fossil fuels produce NOx, emergency generators at hospitals produce NOx, etc.  Are they making the Diesel engined car a scapegoat?
Much of the worst pollution from Diesel engines in cities is from Buses, Lorries and Taxis.
Older vehicles (petrol as well as Diesel) generally produce much worse pollution including NOx

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

It's a crock.
If an accurate pollution chart was produced with diesel cars as one entry I doubt if they would be anywhere near the top polluter.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

VW.... can manufacturers NO2 figures be trusted ?
Apparently, if you drive a VW, or derivative engined car, the answer is NO.
http://news.sky.com/story/1556274/vw-shares-crash-after-car-emissions-scandal
Currently only in the US, but now Germany, and Europe may be hiding the true figures, though no doubt American (California) standards are higher ?
So, when cars are MOT Tested, and NO2 figures measured, does the software that injects more urea – an exhaust fluid – into the car when it is being tested, which limits nitrogen oxide emissions, come into play ?
A British expert in low-emission vehicles claimed the manipulation of air pollution data could be “very widespread” and that tests in Europe are “much more open to this sort of abuse”.

In the US press, fines of up to $18bn are expected to be applied to VW.

And at some point in the car's life the supply of Urea is exhausted and the NO2 figure jumps up during an MOT and the car fails.....then what?
Do you take the car to a VW main dealer for the Urea to be topped up Crazy
