Just had an Amazon order arrive via the Royal Mail, since when did they start that?

Thanks for that, that was one story I missed. Glad their doing it, all they need do now is bring back the twice daily letter deliveries. Or 7 if you go way back in time.

@Mook

Agree with you there, we get a single delivery, anytime between 10am - 4.30pm.

Rare for the same post person to last more than 6 months before we get a different person every day for several weeks before a more permanent postie arrives.

Not uncommon for mail to go astray or letters arriving but not our address.

The service around here is dire.

Re: Royal Mail Sunday Delivery, since when?

In the summer, our post is delivered up to 7pm in the evening, because the staff go on holiday and they have to cover with existing staff.

Re: Royal Mail Sunday Delivery, since when?

The only time we've had a Sunday delivery here has been the Sunday before Christmas but that was only a couple of times in the 80s or 90s.  Our first (now only) delivery is early afternoon, usually by 3 pm. but there have been a few times when it's arrived later.

Mail used to be collected from pillar boxes about six times a day, then that was reduced, and now it's once a day.  For some reason the two nearest ones are emptied at 9 or 9.30 am. weekdays, 7 or 7.30 am. Saturdays.  Great if you posted something late the previous evening but not so good if you post at a more normal hour.  There are others in the area that are emptied at 5 or 5.30 pm. weekdays and 12 or 12.30 pm. Saturdays.  I wonder who came up with the idea of having them emptied at different times?  I bet he/she was awarded a hefty bonus.  About 3 pm. one day last summer I did make a point of using one that was due to be emptied at 5 pm. to find that a collection was being made as I got there.  I enquired about the timing and the guy said he was just making an extra collection, so the advertised times seem to be a bit flexible.

@Mook, I think if we go back far enough, there used to be twelve deliveries a day so letters sent to an address in the local area would arrive on the same day.  Now a 2nd class letter from my bank less than ten minutes' walk away takes two days, or at least it did before the bank closed down. 😀

Erm.... think about it.......  how long does it take to empty ONE box....

travel to the next box on the route...  empty that one...

travel on to the next box on the route... empty that one....

repeat as necessary  to the end of the route...

Obvs you cannot empty them all at 5pm ... or any other specific fixed time....

Re: Royal Mail Sunday Delivery, since when?

I suspect it's another 'religious' day, the one which also affects (affected?) pub opening hours, but can't remember without Googling whether that was 'Good Friday' or 'Easter Sunday' Undecided

Re: Royal Mail Sunday Delivery, since when?

So @Champnet if you remember then it's within an average lifetime, shall we say 70 years, and if it's not Christmas day, then I don't know but interesting all the same.
