Roundabout Ways

Is this the way to keep drivers and cyclists separate?
Roundabout
A new roundabout layout.
The roundabout is in Battersea and is the first of a number around London that will keep drivers and cyclists apart.
Are they worth it though?

Re: Roundabout Ways

It will only work if cyclists obey the road signs and traffic lights.

Re: Roundabout Ways

Not just cyclists, as motorists & pedestrians alike, also have a proven record of not obeying the Highway / code / rules / common sence etc

Re: Roundabout Ways

@billnotben, I agree there. It's a lot of taxpayers' money just because cyclists don't do as they should Sad

Re: Roundabout Ways

its worse than a standard round about because randomly they have failed ot account for large vehicle traffic with those tiny turning circles ..... the traffic lights don't apply to all of the exits and entrances, you have vehicles traversing cycle lanes without signal control and cyclists who having signal control will be convinced there's is the right of way right up to the moment they get crunched by a vehicle .....
they should of stuck to providing underpass /overpass options so as not ot disrupt the flow of traffic in the area between various routes for all traffic (a much better simpler solution)  than this oddness .....
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

Re: Roundabout Ways

Can you please stop singling out the cyclists
Motorists / pedestrians are also well known to not obey the rules / etc

I singled out motorists as being the law breakers ........

Re: Roundabout Ways

@nano
I wasn't referring to you & thanks for your clarification
What some seem to forget is
1. how many times they have given other motorists the (bird) for being cut up, etc
2, A cyclist is much harder to spot than a car (even under the best of conditions)
3. Driving whilst using mobile devices etc
4. Drivers (too lazy to flick a switch) to let you know what direction they want / are going in
The list get longer BTW
However I hope by now they get the Gist Wink

Re: Roundabout Ways

We have had smaller versions of that for quite a number of years now..... there are sections of road for cyclists with a kerb island to keep the cars out of the cycle lanes... they work fairly well...
On google maps... enter 259 Purbrook Way, Havant, England, and then  use the "little yellow man"  to view the road layout....

Re: Roundabout Ways

Try Apex Corner, NW7
The roundabout has an underground (open in the middle) access for people and (unofficially) cyclists.
Most of the roads are 4 lanes...

Re: Roundabout Ways

Not singling out cyclists, there are bad drivers everywhere. However, you want to try driving a bus through Cambridge. In there the problem is cyclists. Admittedly there are a few bad car drivers etc, but the standard of cycling is atrocious.
Foreign students who have no understanding of our road signs, though even these are not the worst. The prize for bad cycling goes to Mum and/or Dad taking the kids out round Cambridge for a cycle. Cycling across pedestrian crossings , going the wrong way up one way roads, cycling through red traffic lights and weaving on and out between very slow moving large vehicles.  These people are training the death rates of tomorrow.
As for the roundabout, meh, seen it all before. Someone will get killed and it will be changed to a normal roundabout named after the dead person. Sad but true.
