Rockhall and Chips

This small lump of rock is something like 250 miles off the coast of Scotland, so not that much closer than Ireland is I'd guess so why all the bother?

Well is seems Scotland has an exclusion zone around it and is not happy with the Irish fishing near it for whatever it is they fish for. Time to send in the Scottish Navy? I know here in Wales we do not have one so I guess it's down to the English to send in the gunboats again... or not.

Re: Rockhall and Chips

Ownership is claimed by the UK - based in England.

So it would be a job for the English Navy surely.

Re: Rockhall and Chips

But there is only the 'English' navy. Wink

Something to do with the White Ensign perhaps?

Fair point, take fire from one of those and there'll be sodhall and chips - and that's putting it politely!

Re: Rockhall and Chips

Being "scottish"... and with the reputation of the scots being "tight"  ( wot ?  tighter than a yokshurman ? ? ?  )

perhaps the Scottish Parliament should invest in some of these...

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

@shutter

Sorted, this is sure to keep them away from the Welsh fishing grounds at least!

Re: Rockhall and Chips

I always thought 'Dim' Psygota meant 'stupid' fish.

English navy has all its patrol ships in the channel rescuing economic migrants off leaky boats provided by people smugglers.  Maybe we could use the island to store these people while they are waiting for a house to be built for them.

Looks pretty much equidistant if it wasnae for the Western isles.

Re: Rockhall and Chips

@198kHz

Doing a Google search for  " what is the lat and long of Rockall"   gives this...

Rockall is one of the few pinnacles of the surrounding Helen's Reef; it is located 301.3 kilometres (162.7 nautical miles) west of the island of Soay, St Kilda, Scotland,

and 423.2 kilometres (263.0 miles; 228.5 nautical miles) northwest of Tory Island, County Donegal, Ireland.

However, just because it is near(er) to Scotland... does not give them the "ownership".... take, for example, The Channel Islands ! ! !... Gibraltar, Falklands, and other places around the world...

@shutter

Quite right, we even laid claim to the entire east coast of America once and half of Africa, half of France - in fact half the world it seems so let's not begrudge Scotland a little lump of rock.... or Wales Patagonia.

And who owns Boston if not the Irish? Wink

Re: Rockhall and Chips

Hmm, interesting   - also, just realised I spelt Rockall wrong Crazy2

'He added: "By international law of the sea if you stay on an island more than 21 days, you're residing. I'm the first person to reside on Rockall."

He said that when Britain annexed Rockall in 1955 "no other country was interested".

"It went on for about 10, 20 years and then oil started popping up and everybody was interested in Rockall."

Asked how the fishermen embroiled in the latest dispute should be treated, he answered: "With respect but if you're in someone else's waters, you're going to be towed out."

Re: Rockhall and Chips

Would have been a great place for a pirate radio station back in the day.  Imagine all the fun they could have had relating the name to the type of music; All Rock from Rockall, If all you want is rock, tune in to Radio Rockall etc. etc.
