Red Arrows

Red Arrows: Inside the Bubble

The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team - more commonly known as the Red Arrows - is based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire and has taken part in more than 4,500 displays since 1965.
This documentary offers an insight into the day-to-day work and lives of the 120-strong team of pilots and ground crew as they prepare to mark the unit's 50th display season.
I've enjoyed watching them so many times, let's hope they are not disbanded under cost cutting proposals

Re: Red Arrows

In 5 year's time the Red Arrows will be a flight of 3 small drones which comprise 10% of the national Air Force fleet.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Red Arrows

A request by Commonwealth Games organisers for the Red Arrows to trail the colours of the Scottish flag during the opening ceremony was overruled by the Government, it has emerged.

The BRITISH Broadcorping Castration might have been just a bit biased !
And that was one of the ¼" tape editing tasks we had to pass during BBC training !

Did you watch the programme, wasn't it Brilliant.
Absolutely Superb.
Brings back memories of RAF Fighter pilots, and their consummate skill.
A couple of things I was asked whilst a group of us were watching it..
1) What is the ziz zag pattern on the cockpit Roof ?
2) Why do the Pilots wear those bands around their lower legs ?

1) The ziz zag pattern is actually MDC, or Miniature Detonating core, and is designed to blow the perspex cockpit roof apart milliseconds before the rocket ejection seat, with pilot, ejects, and exits  through the roof !
Back seat passenger too.
2) The leg bands, if you look closely, have metal loops included in them, their function being to pull the pilots' legs back into the seat, again milliseconds before ejecting.
Although never a member of the Red Arrows, I did a lot of development work on Jet Fighters, at British Aerospace at Warton, nr Preston.
Part of which included SITTING IN AND STANDING ON THE EJECTOR SEAT !!!
If they eject, they create a Vacuum around them for several feet, so not a good place to be ...
Happy Days.
Hope you did watch it, or later on Catch-up.

Of course, you can't beat actually seeing the Red Arrows live, as I have done many times.
A privilege to be present.
50 years, doesn't seem that long.
True Professionals, the whole Team.

Re: Red Arrows

I have it recorded and looking forward to watching it either tonight or tomorrow.
What is a shame is that since the closing of Manston Airport I haven't seen or heard them this year. Previously they would do regular practice over where we live with some great views.

I seem to recall that they are only allowed to eject twice and then their RAF career is over due to the G forces excerted on the spine which can cause a loss in height..
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Red Arrows

7up , yes i believe that in the 70,s they did have some rule , but i dont think so now as the new seats are much better  there are some pilots who have had 4 or  6 ejects

Re: Red Arrows

I wonder what aircraft these pilots were flying to gain such experience? Apart from research on seats of course.

Re: Red Arrows

Watched the program this morning; fascinating insight.
I have more interest in planes, etc. than I could ever have in ships and the sea!
