I'm reading that the last of big time payday loan sharks are pulling out of the UK and also, that the government has offered to bail them out with a loan.... repayments at 2500%
Sounds like a good deal. 😉
How on earth did we ever allow these cowboys to operate in the way that they did, and why is there no government scheme to lend out low value, low interest short term loans for those that need it and no, not to buy bloody Christmas presents.

And the gambling apps that are just about everywhere. Why is that allowed.
Has to be a tax gathering thing I guess.

Good! I'm glad to hear of another bunch of parasitical vultures going out of business. Total and utter garbage the lot of them.
Ever since Tony Bliar came to power it's like his and successive governments have given a green light to dishonest ways of making fast cash out of those who are easily parted with their money - typically the vulnerable. This madness must stop.
I was a young kid in the 80s. This was clearly a troubled country back then - I was just a kid but could see that the country had suffered some sort of social decline over previous generations. I'm sure there's always been issues with poverty etc but it seemed that something else had dragged society down the pan even more.
Since then i've noticed it only getting worse. Okay we had the introduction of DLA to help out the sick in society and that did help a lot of those in desperation however the government (whoever it is) does seem to be on a constant crack down against those at the bottom and it is only making the situation worse. Look at the delays for universal credit payments for example - the poorest in the country are basically being told "if you make it this far we'll pay you, otherwise go starve and get evicted".
How does that help anyone? - It's just creating more social injustice and unrest which ultimately the government then has to spend money on for the police, CPS solicitors, court hearings etc.
Something MUST change for the better. We can afford two big aircraft carriers that nobody really wanted, a fleet of very expensive F35s to replace the cheaper Harriers which won a war without support from any other country and yet we can't afford to help those in desperate circumstances and create a better social standing for them?
It isn't supposed to be like this. Our society has been warped by politicians up to no good and those sleeze balls are only getting worse.

Except we did not allow it !......We had no say in it.!
If someone with money wants to do something no matter how it impinges on other peoples lives it usually goes ahead.
Seems to take years of complaints, government enquiries, public protests to bring some of these things to a end despite it being obvious that they are wrong.

How did we allow it, by not saying anything or having no say legally on something that was totally unethical?
I may be mistaken but I'm sure Payday loans were capped some years back.
Just to add that for those on certain benefits 'Budgeting Loans' can be had from the governments social fund.

Dvorak has it in one, or maybe I should say two. My impoverished niece had to buy groceries on her credit card "to tide me over". Her essential expenditure included latest iPhone at £60/ month and Sky TV package at £55+/month. We bailed her out for the sake of her children but she's only one of millions who think that when they're short of £100 they can borrow £100 so they have to find £100 plus interest to repay next month.

Yup and I would add reverese charge text messages to your list @198kHz.
I got stung by them just when years ago I got the odd one or two costing me £1.50.
£1.50 on one of your bills, most people would overlook it. I didn't and reported it. The network were useless and it just stopped luckily.
Some scam going on there, £1.50-£3 on lots of mobile accounts would add up to serious £'s.
I never use them and I don't go into competitions, don't care who wins on the X Factor (it is hardly going to affect my life). Or who gets voted off I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. Mind you if they put Ant and Dec on the list I'd probably change my mind then and vote for both of them.

And they wonder why kids cannot manage, but who has warped society so much that kids spend so much money on such stuff. Seems that smart phones and the like are now far more important that putting decent grub in the kids tummys or shoes on their feet.
It's a trope I know, but not in my day.
I can recall having a second hand black and white television when most people had colour, and I was working as a television engineer!

PS and just to the above that those loans are interest free... every litttle helps. 😉
