Quantum of ?

My DVD copy of "Quantum of Solace" arrived today, courtesy of Amazon. Daniel Craig is my choice for James Bond from a short list that only includes Pierce Brosnam in it. Never been a great fan of JB movies until Casino Royale.
As the credits rolled Mrs petlew and I looked at each other and as one said "Well Ok, what was that all about"
Can anybody help please?

Re: Quantum of ?

I haven't seen it. Ever since I misheard the title as Quantum Of Shoelace on the radio, I can't get rid of the thought that it must be a duff film.  Cheesy
And it did get some naff reviews.

Re: Quantum of ?

I found the best way to watch it is to watch Casino Royal just before-hand. I did this before seeing it in the cinema when QoS was released last October.
I have watched it again and understood it better but I have always been left feeling a little disappointed it. So far, it has felt like an action movie with James Bond in rather than a James Bond film. It's also the shortest Bond film by some distance - so I felt a little short-changed.

It's also the shortest Bond film by some distance. Agreed

Seemed to me the whole cast was out-acted by Judi Dench.

Re: Quantum of ?

I did enjoy Quantum (am awaiting the DVD) when I saw it at the cinema but think it was basically Bond just going nuts after the murder of Vesper Lynd, probably would have been better added onto Casino Royale thus making it longer.
Good action film but I agree, not really what you'd expect from a JB.
I agree though, best Bonds have been Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
I do still miss Desmond Llewelyn as Q but think they did the right thing by cutting that character as while John Cleese is a very funny man no other actor could really play that role.
Terrible shame that he died.

Re: Quantum of ?

Thought it was very poor, didn't seem to be much about it that made it a James Bond film, aside from the names of characters.

Of the two I thought Pierce Brosnan was closest to the character in the Ian Fleming books. Fleming's Bond was never as violent as Daniel Craig's portrayal. Can't speak for the post-Fleming books as I haven't read one. However, if the films were made strictly to the books there may have only ever been one.

I think Desmond Llewelyn added a great deal of consistency throughout his time with the Bond franchise. After his death it seemed very poignant that his last words in The World Is Not Enough were "always have an escape plan" alluding to his probably leaving the series. Apparantly, though, he was not about to retire. Still very sad and I miss the character, too, but agree it should never be replaced by another actor.

Re: Quantum of ?

Spooky though how in that film he introduces his replacement isn't it?
A very sad conincidence
Perhaps the producers decided to head in a different direction when they realised that John Cleeses' ,character had no mileage.
DC has played quite gritty characters such as the guy in Layer Cake (an excellent film) so the one liners wouldn't be as good so thats why they have ramped up the violence a little but still no where near some of the stuff you see in films.

Re: Quantum of ?

Received from Amazon today a refund of £6 for Q of S, as I had pre-ordered it some time ago. Not only very welcome, but quite appropriate as well.

Re: Quantum of ?

Couldn't stand the last film with Daniel Craig so I didn't even bother with this latest installment. It seems that I was fortunate not to have wasted my money besides which they started to turn bad with Pierce Brosnan and with the advent of the bourne films James Bond didn't stand a chance.
Who would win in a fight David Webb (Bourne Identity) or James bond.
Clearly Webb would especially if you've read the books. The guy goes after Carlos the Jackal, the most notorius arms supplier and assassin in the world.

Re: Quantum of ?

Interesting thought Euge, depends how you compare them; film for film or book for book. Book for book I would agree Bond would lose hands down, Ian Fleming's Bond was never into gratuitous violence, only when it was necessary, and usually the minimum necessary to achieve a result. But film for film it gets more difficult as you need to pick which actors era to compare. But if Daniel Craig's portrayal was used then I think he would "win" but only just, if only because of his seemingly indestructible abilities, and the fusillade of bullets he passes through that do no more than scratch him, either that or the villans are extremely poor shots.
We could open this up for other's thoughts on a hypothetical outcome perhaps.

Bourne is absolutely dire.
Fell asleep during the first film it was that interesting.

You need to take your blinkers off - Bourne Identity beats Quantum on just about every level.
