Re: Prestel developer dies

I was browsing, but not banking. Unless the banks used the system when I worked for Midland in 1980. I can't remember Roll eyes

@mav Yes I believe the only online banks were Bank of Scotland and Midland!

Re: Prestel developer dies

I remember having seminars or similar when I started working at the GLC in respect of using Prestel. Very interesting stuff and few staff were given access to it and I was one of the chosen few Cheesy

Re: Prestel developer dies

Just been reading his Wikipedia entry.
Quote
The largest UK project, apart from the Inland Revenue [the UK IRS], was the pricing of over 334 million medical prescriptions per annum for the Prescription Pricing Authority[1981-83][now NHS Prescription Services], part of the UK's single provider health system. These systems were used throughout the UK for a decade or more.

I worked on both of those. I originally worked for the PPA where I was development team leader for the part of the system using ROCC supplied computers. It was once we were well in to the implementation phase that I moved to ROCC.

Re: Prestel developer dies

Hard to recall accurately now, but back in 1979 (or so) I worked for the late lamented ICL and led an early micro-processor (8086) based project to convert the Native ICL comms protocol ICLC02 to drive Prestel terminals from a mainframe application.  Sold a number of them into TV Retail outlets as 'Sales aids".  Live updated stock, pricing etc.  At the time the only 'live' Prestel service was at Martlesham Heath.
An innovative piece of technology to rival the French Minitel system but bogged down by lack of clear delivery vision by BT.
Interesting times though.  Not thought of Prestel for many a year.
