Presidential Election and debates

On 8th November, 2016 America will elect a new President.
Campaigning has already started with the two parties deciding who is to be their candidate.
The Democrats hold their first debate tonight. There are currently 5 contenders of which only two are well known, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. There is also an outside chance that the current vice president, Joe Biden, could throw his hat into the ring.
The Republicans have already held two debates and have 15 candidates to choose from.  Interestingly three of the leading contenders are non-politicians. In the lead is businessman Donald Trump, followed by a retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, and the ex CEO of HP Carly Fiorina.
If you think our 6 week election campaigns in the UK become boring have some sympathy for the US where there is over a year still to go.
So who will become the next President and the most important person in the Free World? Will America get its first female President?

Re: Presidential Election and debates

Last night's Democratic debate was an interesting one. Clinton came out clearly as the front runner followed by Bernie Sanders. The remaining 3 candidates had little impact.
In a poll today Donald Trump is still the Republican front runner.

Re: Presidential Election and debates

I thought by now that Trump may have got knocked off the perch but he hasn't. The top contenders are little changed. Trump has 27.5% support and is still ahead of the field. Ben Carson comes in next with 19.8%. The first of the politicians comes in third, that's Marco Rubio with 12.5%.
Trump is certainly holding his own but he has another year to go. Can he hold on without making a mistake that could cost him his lead?

Re: Presidential Election and debates

Apparently Trump is being challenged by two others, Rubio and Cruz, both apparently determined to knock him from his perch. With a bit of luck!

Re: Presidential Election and debates

Yes but Rubio has only 12.5% support and Cruz even less at 11.3% so they both have a long way to go to catch him. Of the two of them Rubio has the better chance as he will attract the Latio voters. There will have to be some more casualties in the runners race so it could all depend on where their votes get reallocated.

Re: Presidential Election and debates

For the first time in ages the citizens of the USA have a good effective President called Obama. He's helped to turnaround their economy, hasn't dragged them into major wars and wants to do something about their gun problem yet they don't seem to want to re-elect him.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Presidential Election and debates

Trump wants to ban Muslims from entering the US. An interesting scenario if you look at the situation at border control. If Mohamed Ali, a Christian turns up followed by Richard Reid, the shoe bomber. If both deny they are Muslim who is going to be believed and allowed into the US Wink Wink

Re: Presidential Election and debates

You have to ask about the mentality of his followers, it's scary to think that there are 10's of 1000s of Americans who actually agree with him and that's the really worrying thing about it!

Re: Presidential Election and debates

is it that the majority of voting Americans agree with him or that they agree there should be no more allowed in ?
its not hard to establish if someone is a Muslim or not, they cannot help but get angry when you insult their grim version of the fairy story.......
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

Re: Presidential Election and debates

A big weekend in US this weekend. On Monday there is the Iowa Caucus which may give the first official indication as to how America will vote in electing a new President.
Despite many predictions to the contrary Trump  is still leading the pack on the Republican side. He has a 35% share of the vote, well ahead of the second placed Cruz who is on 19%. The one thing that has started to happen is that the politicians have started moving up the polls a little whilst the likes of Carson falling down the polls. After Iowa there will be a number of contenders dropping out and their votes going elsewhere, which will possibly help the likes of Rubio and Cruz a little.
If Trump continues his march to the nomination the one person who will really benefit is Hillary Clinton who could well end up as the first female President.

Re: Presidential Election and debates

Trump is using the oldest trick in the book, find a scapegoat and then blame them for most of the problems in the country.
Should he get to be president then he will have access to the code needed for the nukes, that's scary.
