Poverty linked to youth violence according to the Mayor of London, so as an ex children's home/council house tenant on an austerity hit south London estate of the 50s, why did I not stab anybody?
Come to think of it, nobody else I knew did either so we must have been an odd lot back then and no mistake.

Maybe the poverty is not financial but parenting?

Oh dear @Minivanman heres me agreeing with you again.
Although we lived in a 'posh' area of Sheffield, and I still do, as a family we had a 'cash-poor' upbringing, but I don't recall me or any of my siblings going out and attacking people with knives - even though (shock horror) I had one from quite a young age, usually used only to carve tree trunks.

@Minivanman No video games, no rap music. OK mods and rockers for say over 15year olds but they were fist fights or bike chains etc not lethal. Ont really has westerns on tv to watch and they were not very bloody!

Masses of National Servicemen could be found outside Reading Station on Sunday evenings in the 50s. The Army were going back to Aldershot or Salisbury Plain, the Navy to Portsmouth, and the RAF to Yatesbury, Compton Basset or Locking. Gangs of Teddy Boys were on the prowl around the town, and most Sundays at least two of the factions got involved in a battle. The weapons in use, but only by a few, were webbing belts (nasty brass buckles), razors and bike chains.
No-one was very seriously hurt in my experience, and when someone went down they were left alone. It seemed more "Queensbury Rules" then than it does now. Maybe that was because the war was a recent experience and people had had enough serious damage and death.
Edit: ref poverty, the basic National Service pay was 24/- per week (£1.20 p) after compulsory deductions, but very few people were well-off.
