Police warning over myth that dialling 999 charges mobile phone battery !!

Mobile users have been urged to ignore an urban myth that claims dialling 999 charges their phone's battery.
Derbyshire Police said they'd received several emergency calls that turned out to be from people believing their phone would be charged.
It said the "completely untrue" myth, which suggests calling 999 from a mobile then disconnecting boosts battery, had been circulating for a year.

Surely everyone knows that you have to type ʎɹǝʇʇɐq ǝƃɹɐɥɔ into a text message, don't press send, then ensure your mobile phone display is pointing up towards a light source, preferably the Sun ?

(Not all phones will accept inverted characters, and it's quite difficult typing them in with the phone upside down !)

I'm always amazed at just how stupid people can become. We have all known for years that 999 is the emergency phone number so why on earth would they turn it into a phone charging service? (not that wireless long range charging even exists!). Some people really are MORONS!
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

I would have put money on this being a DM story, before seeing the link.

Several can be as little as three. Anyway, we all know it's better to dial 101 if you just need a quick boost.

This goes a long way to prove my theory that smart phones are now smarter than many people holding them. Which kind of begs the question, what did we invent all of this stuff for in the first place?
That said, I did come across a mobile phone charger that uses stray WiFi and Bluetooth signals as a means of charging a phone. But then it was developed by the same experts that brought bomb detectors to Iraq.
Another urbane myth is, if you remove the SIM and blast it in a microwave oven, this resets the pay-as-you-go credit. It also causes a fire. So you call 999. Which recharges the phone too.

Well it was from The Mirror - I guess exactly the sort of reader base that needs a warning it is false. Grin

Don't you mean the kind of reader base that will see the article then still try it themselves to see if it really does work?  Lips are sealed

I wonder if sometimes Siri replies
Angry are you some kind of serious moron for asking me that?
For really real, Samsung Tab smartphones can be configured to detect which way up your head is. This feature is for people who might have their head upside down today - the display adjusts accordingly. Clever stuff. [upside down smiley]
