Police to have degrees, really?

One retired police officer had exactly the same thought as myself, "The only degree a police officer needs is a degree of common sense - they'll learn on the job....."

Mind you, it might reduce the number of police officers we now see with  tattoos. Wink

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

Rather than a degree being essential I would have thought it far more essential that police officers use their computers for work and not to access porn.

And not abuse their position of trust and power to obtain sexual favours from those they should be protecting or lawfully restraining.

Police should be given the Third Degree

Several mentions of "Self Funding" in the article I read this morning.

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

Well lots of jobs ask for degrees these days so why not the police ?

The fact  that a company requires a person to have a degree it does not always follow a degree is needed to do that job.

Amazing some of the subjects you can get a degree in these days.

At one time a degree usually guaranteed a good job for life, now we have people with degrees struggling to get any sort of low paid job so is it still worth getting a degree these days ?

People with degrees don't have tattoos?

Yes, gleneagles, a plain old BA or BSc, even with (Hons) added to it, will no longer suffice.  Some employers are also fussy about which university the degree is from.

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

If ur average copper on the beat had to have a degree , idk if we'd see the police again 😂 I have zero respect for them. Thames Valley killled a friend of mine back in 2008 http://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/11784308.Police_officer_admits_he_contributed_to__if_not_caused...

The case of course eventually went the way all cases against people who are accused of drug offences, the Drug Swuad and undercover detectives aswell as local police were all acquitted in 2015. He was doing wat he was doing but he was a great lad, sadly missed #tangent...

As for the police needing degrees, degrees in what? Their roles are so diverse, they're public servants not masterminds, as I think most if us know. I have a lot of respect for the ones that make a difference to crime SOCA, The Flying Squad, The TAU (wen deployed properly), CID.

As for people with tattoos not having degrees or being able to get one , I didn't see the original comment, that's hilarious. What on earth has a bit of artwork , however good or bad , that one has on ones body, visible or not has anything to do with intelligence. I'd hazard a guess that a guy with a swastika on his neck and 1488 on the other side ( Google 1488, i refuse to explain bigotry / racism) , or other such hate speech/images. Some people make dumb choices. They have a view point at 16, get inked up, come to be 30 and realise White Power isn't really gonna get them the £30k pa job they hoped for. We all have a past and a story. It's what we do in the here n now that matters most , in my opinion.

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

For those that mentioned it I have no problem with police officers having tattoos, hence the wink after my comment. However it's a fair bet that if they start filling their ranks with the university educated, there will be less of them?

Just for the record I had a couple done back in the 60s and went back to school years later on route to getting that degree so yes indeed crypto_sloth, we all have a past and a story. Onwards and upwards eh. Thumbs Up

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

I think I am correct in saying that all registered nurses have to have a degree these days, excluding of course those who were registered before degrees were required.

Unfortunately some nurses and I stress the word,'some' have the attitude that we have a degree so the basic care can be left to care assistants whilst we deal with all the office stuff.

I fully agree some nurses who specialise in various areas and work as clinical nurse specialists and similar posts may well benefit from having a degree but to insist that the whole profession needs a degree, is in my opinion wrong although others no doubt may well disagree.

What has this to do with the police, well they might go the same way, we already have community support officers so will we see more of these, whilst the police with degrees stick to the office work ? we already see less of them on the streets than ever these days.

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

Of course the real reason why Police are now required to have degrees is not because it assumes a standard of intelligence or education but it’s actually to give them time to mature so that when they do join they don’t look as if they’ve came straight from the Scouts or Guides! Cheesy

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

Will you be able to refuse a police issue speeding ticket if the officer concerned has a Degree qualification of less than 2.1?

While I'm in favour of vocational qualifications, a University academic degree is not suitable for police work. Sitting in a lecture theatre does not qualify you to handle real life.

Hear hear!  Though the latest cohort of University Nurses are no improvement. Their medical assessment and History taking skills are poor, but most of all they learn little of the empathy needed by nurses to do their jobs properly.

Re: Police to have degrees, really?

@gleneagles One of my nursing friends told me that when nurses with nursing degrees first started appearing on her ward she asked one of them to make a cup of tea for a patient.  The graduate demanded to know where on the patients care plan the requirement for tea was recorded, and what the medical indications were for providing this patient with said beverage.

@AlaricAdair I don't think Oxbridge degrees are graded in the same way so you'd never find one with a 2:1 from those institutions, however excellent they might be.

What copper on what beat? - The last time I saw one was around 2008 and he was old skool by his own admission hence they let him out to do walkies rather than being stuffed into a car being a mobile call centre response type that you can usually find at the local roadside burger van.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
