Plastic in multi purpose top soil bags.... and others?

For the gardeners here, has anybody else noticed bits of plastic in those multi purpose top soil bags that we buy?

I have, and it was a bit disconcerting I must say to notice the odd bit of either soft or hard plastic in there after tipping a few bags of the stuff into my newly raised beds - so what's going on.

Did a (very) quick check on the net to see if 'bulking out' for want of a better word was common or accepted practice but have found nothing so far.

Any thoughts guys?

@Minivanman   I don`t do the gardening.... but thoughts came to mind.... is this just in the Top Soil bags, or in the rest of the various "compost" type bags?   Is is only from one manufacturer, or "in general" that this occurs ?

You might have more success contacting the supplier rather than posting on an ISP forum.

I might well do that now @shutter, just thought I'd test the water with the gardeners around here before I jumped in at the deep end. Thumbs_Up

Re: Plastic in multi purpose top soil bags.... and others?

Multi purpose composts can include composted green waste, often sourced from council's recycling facilities, so there's always a chance you'll find the uncompostable odds and sods originally chucked into the green bins which have escaped the screening process.

Surprised you've found plastic in bagged topsoil though - I wouldn't be happy paying a premium price for something bulked up with organic matter (that's not what topsoil is for.)

Not a gardener myself but I have heard of plastic pellets in potting compost to aid draining.

Re: Plastic in multi purpose top soil bags.... and others?

As said most of this is composted rubbish which is why I stopped buying it. Despite what it says on the bags most run out of steam quickly when growing plants in it.

I only buy peat based compost or at least a compost with a high percentage of peat in it. Plants seem to prefer it and grow much bigger stronger and faster in it.

Unfortunately peat is a finite resource, and can't be easily replaced, and digging it out is very destructive. (Fun fact, the Norfolk Broads were created by people digging peat hundreds of years ago)

True enough but like many things it's still available from sites where care to the environment is taken into consideration.

But I do agree that the mass dig wallet filling days of peat extraction are over.
