Just because a place is further north does not mean that it's going to be colder. If you look at the averages for Iceland you see that the winter temperatures are nearly the same as for Geneva.

Rome 41 degrees 53 minutes north
New York 40 degrees 45 minutes north

The reason many people get this wrong is they look at Ordnance survey landranger maps etc  - which although Glasgow is still shown further to the left, grid north is not the same as true north. They change it to better fit the country in less maps.

I wonder how many would get it right if I'd phrased it along the following lines:
Glasgow is closest to due north of which of the following places: Reading, Swindon, Bristol, Exeter or Plymouth?
And how many could correctly name the most Westerly point of the British mainland?
