Passports up in price to £77.50 – three times rate of inflation

I think this is scandalous, because less people are renewing everyone else pays more.
Quote
The hike in the cost will take place in September, and means the document has now risen three times higher than the level of inflation since 1997 when the Labour Government came to power.
The Home Office claims the above-inflation increase is due to the recession as the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) had "lost revenue".
Travellers have now seen the price of a passport jump from £18 in 1997. If the cost had risen in line with retail prices, it would now cost just £24.55.
Inflation, as measured by retail prices, is in negative territory, with average prices down by 1.1 per cent.

It's madness it really is and the kids ones which you can only have for 5 years are more than half the price of an adult one.
It's as if they didn't want us leave, in case we don't come back Grin

Just had to get a new one for my son who is now 17, cost £72. This is so he can visit France.
When someone from France comes here they don't even need a passport just a photo ID.

I thought you only need photo id to travel anywhere in Europe, or is that a vicious rumour?

The UK isn't part of the agreement that allows free movement around Europe.  It is part of the Schengen agrreement which we didn't sign.

Typical, we don't bother with the stuff that might make our lives easier.

We didn't sign,as far as I can remember, because it would open our borders to anyone wanting to enter the UK. Doesn't seem to have had much of an effect does it Sad

What - rushed passport lasts 11 but an ordinary one 10 years ??.
It is an extortionate cost  Angry

Nah, when you change your name you can also apply for a new 10yr passport, but you can carry over up to 1yr from your current one, so you end up with an 11yr one.

So they've lost revenue.  It's a bit like Tesco putting up the price of baked beans because they're not selling enough Angry
it's just another stealth tax IMO.

Surely supply/demand oughta work the opposite way?
If folks aren't buying, reduce the cost, not increase it.
