Parking surcharge for diesel cars

In a weird form of green populism Westminster Council are proposing are parking surcharge for diesel cars from April 2017. This latest local authority tax is raised under the banner of anti-pollution. It is of course merely yet another money raising scheme as parked cars do not produce pollution.

Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Parking surcharge for diesel cars

It will, in fact, create more pollution, because people will just drive around town whilst "the other half" does the shopping, or whatever, and then pick them up after a phone call... thus avoiding the parking charge ...

Some people just don`t think it all the way through, do they,......

Of course, they could just apply it to those delivery lorries, that park up with their engine running, whilst the driver, or mate does the delivery.... and also those taxi`s that sit in parking bays with the engine running waiting for customers,..

Why do people still do that?   modern diesel engines start almost immediately, especially if they are already "warm"...

Very true.

Once one council starts it the others soon follow.

Re: Parking surcharge for diesel cars

It's a piddle take from an already wealthy Council and one that will hit the working man rather than the well heeled resident - and what about vans, taxis, lorries and buses?

Stupid stupid stupid testicle squeezing exercise.

PS. Not to hijack your topic @AlaricAdair but this is a much better idea!

True enough about the satnav but.......

Any HGV driver failing to see that low bridge sign shouldn't be an HGV driver in the first place.

The only driver aid that would help a driver like that is one that does the driving itself.

Volvo already have an autonomous lorry, there are videos of it and a Volvo executive playing chicken with it on the Internet.

"Any HGV driver failing to see that low bridge sign......."

And yet how many buses have we seen bash into bridges over the years?

Re: Parking surcharge for diesel cars

I can sort of understand the bus thing.

You get used to driving a single decker then one day you get put on a different route in a double.

Re: Parking surcharge for diesel cars

As Lee Evans said when talking about the double decker v low bridge.

"Didn't he know he was driving a double decker"

" Didn't he wonder where his passengers went",

"They got on, paid their fare and disappeared" (although he didn't say disappeared)

Of course, the bus company should know which routes have low bridges on them and therefore not put unsuitable buses on such routes, of course, if you have a sleepy driver returning a bus after the last run of the day to the depot and forgets it's a DD...........
