Paper Fivers

Got a stash of Paper Fivers ?  or maybe not... but you have about 5 weeks to dispose of them... cos they are due for withdrawal from circulation on May 5 2017.

Haven`t seen a new £1 coin yet though ! ! !...

Re: Paper Fivers

From the Money Saving Expert site:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/team-blog/2017/02/14/youve-piggy-bank-coin-jar-watch-1-coins-will-s...

What about old fivers – aren’t they also being scrapped?

That’s right. The shiny new plastic fivers are already in circulation, and the older, larger fiver is leaving us even sooner than the pound – the withdrawal date’s set for 5 May.

Now technically, unlike the pound coin, the £5 banknote is produced by the Bank of England and not the Royal Mint. This means that, even after it’s been scrapped, the old fiver is covered by what’s effectively a Bank of England ‘buy back guarantee’ – old banknotes officially hold their face value “for all time”.

That means if you’re stuck with an old fiver after 5 May, you can still exchange it at face value with the Bank of England in London, in person or by post (at your own risk). What’s more, while they’re under no obligation to do so, many banks and building societies say they will accept the old fivers from their own customers.

So no rush, just don't forget the recorded delivery... Smiley

@HairyMcbiker  Depends how many you have... you could frame them with a large frame, and a black background  .. would look very nice on the wall..

Re: Paper Fivers

I've still a couple of old mailbags full of these I'm still trying to get rid of from a job we did back in '63.

Been nibbled by mice, but they should be OK.

Re: Paper Fivers

I've noticed I get more fivers in change now they are plastic.

How about selling any paper fivers you may have to those people who won't touch the plastic ones.  £6 might be an appropriate price.

Re: Paper Fivers

I keep replacing the Moth balls.

I did have a problem a couple of years ago when I forgot the combination.

Re: Paper Fivers

@Strat

I have four of those in mint condition and all with consecutive numbers. Value? Not a lot, apparently Sad

Re: Paper Fivers

I'd consider myself lucky to get £1 for each that I have, no consecutive numbers.

Re: Paper Fivers

Well if they had been SCOTTISH bank notes, then they would still be legal tender. Yes we still have paper £'s.
Not seen any for a while though.

Re: Paper Fivers

@HairyMcbiker  Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes are not legal tender anywhere.

@Strat  there is a £1-note like yours but in mint condition for sale on ebay for £56.39. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/162433980310?chn=ps&adgroupid=13585920426&rlsatarget=aud-295856145004... I have one like that in slightly better condition than the one in your post but by no means in mint condition.  I also have one of the earlier ones in relatively good condition but they are going for about £2 on ebay so it would have been more profitable to deposit it in a bank and pocketing the interest.
