He may not be breaking the law when filming but he probably has by posting it on YouTube.

5 mins 57seconds of fame and idiot security both in the wrong.  youtube is full of fame seekers looking to create scenes to record them.

Nice find Jim, that made me laugh. Its typical of the ignorance that so many photographers run into, especially when he was called a pervert. Most photographers know the law better then the police do when it comes to taking photos' in public places so these people with half a brain cell should keep thier noses out.

Excellent,
I Do a fair bit of photography and some months back there was a lot of criticism posted on Photography websites of the Police who were preventing or getting people to delete photographs of the Houses of Parliament.
This video demonstrates the message has not got across to everyone.
Several websites now have cards which photographers can now print out and hand to anyone who questions their right to take photographs of a public place.

My reply to him was “although there is nothing in the law which prevents me from taking pictures of anyone I can assure you I’m only taking pictures of the building and if people happen to be in the shot then that cannot be helped.”

Make you wonder why Google and others pixelate their pictures when they have not got permission from the person to publish.

Maybe because their images are potentially for commercial use?

Re: One for the photographers who like taking pictures of crisp factories

I have a copy of the law in my camera bag.
There are certain prohibited places,
Defence establishments
factories, Dockyards, mines, ships and aircraft belonging to the crown
Munition stores and places belonging to the Civil Aviation
BT telephone exchanges
in Court (£1000 fine)
Surprising  that Lakenheath USAF Fighter base has a public car park for taking photo's at the end of the main runway
Certain wildlife is prohibited without a licence
Bank notes
Police can not stop you, but can warn you under the Terroism act of 2000
Dont go to far - Harassment and invasion of privicy is not a good idea, but not illegal
Certain places photography is not allowed, Trafalger Square, Parliament Square and the Royal Parks
got my chart via LONDONPHOTOBLOGGERS, Google didn't find that just now

Where can't I take photographs?
You need permission to take pictures in Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square if they are for commercial purposes (the permission is expensive). There are also some military sites where photography is banned, but these are well signed.
and from the Royal Parks website
Quote
• The Royal Parks supports amateur and student photographers taking photographs for a private portfolio, educational coursework or other non-commercial use. It is necessary to apply for permission to use images of any of The Royal Parks for commercial purposes.

Re: One for the photographers who like taking pictures of crisp factories

found a sheet double sided A4 PDF, cant be hot linked, but this is the legal routehttp://www.sirimo.co.uk/2009/05/14/uk-photographers-rights-v2/
This is intended to provide a short UK guide to the main legal restrictions on the right to take photographs and the right to publish photographs that have been taken.
The guide was written by Linda Macpherson LL.B, Dip. L.P., LL.M  is a freelance legal consultant specialising in Media Law and Intellectual Property Law. She is also a part-time law lecturer and has presented seminars on law for photographers.
Just printed off my copy, now to laminate it, so much on it you might be able to re fomat to 4 A5, my original resuma is on one double sided A6

Re: One for the photographers who like taking pictures of crisp factories

I have only been queried once, came out of the local Maplins and a lot of police action, the shop is on a service road on a roundabout, they had shut it off as a person was on the ledge of a window on the 3rd floor of a car park the other side of the roundabout, my car was parked on the slip road, got my camera out and zoomed in to see what was going on, Police traffic warden came over and told me off, might scare the person.  But I was behind my car and probably could not see me.
I took no notice, didnt get a picture either as he went back into the car park.
Just got a new Cannon sx40,  fantastic zoom 35 times optical and then up to 140 digital, got a small video might try and post it, not sure how many M, its still in the camera,  in 35 mm terms thats over a 1000 mm lens, just looked in the manual, the 140 times is 3360mm in 35 M terms.  who need extra  lenses, just a good tripod
