One Step Forward.......

In order to cut down on packing and plastic, for some time now the Mrs has been buying our milk (and orange juice) in those traditional glass bottles. It's a little bit more effort as after use we rinse them out and take them back to the shop on our next purchase. None of this return deposit business we are reading about in the news, it just seemed to be the right thing to do.

So what's happened now?

Well when returning the last lot yesterday and buying some more, we now find they come fitted with flip top plastic openers!

Talk about one step forward and one step back. Crazy2

I know where I am, I've been lost here before.

Re: One Step Forward.......

There used to be deposit scheme on glass bottles years ago in the eighties - think it was lucozade that ran it? I remember we used to collect loads of them.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: One Step Forward.......

Got 7p back on a large glass bottle of Barr lemonade in 1976/77 I remember.

Milk bottles were traditionally collected by the milkman who had delivered them to your house, but we don't see many milk floats nowadays; we just get stuck behind the refuse truck instead.

Re: One Step Forward.......

The Milk Stations that are popping up on farms all around the country are the greenest way. You fill your own containers direct from a vending machine on the farm (they sell glass bottles to get you started). This is one near us.

This one is (vaguely) near me:

A great idea, but not exactly cheap at £1 per litre... Shouldn’t it be cheaper than supermarket milk given there are no bottles or transport to pay for, and no retailer profit to add on?

Re: One Step Forward.......

It proves the extent that the supermarkets are (a) exploiting the farmers and (b) using milk as a loss leader!
