Olympic flame

Gets lit today.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-18002760
Is my memory playing tricks, wasn't the 1948 flame carried all the way by runners from Greece, were there not protests about it being carried on the cross channel ferry, purists wanted a 'swim-relay' to carry the torch.
The route around Greece looks interesting

Re: Olympic flame

Lit by the rays of the sun - we'd have problems doing that with our weather at present Wink

Re: Olympic flame

With the size of my gas bill recently, I'd thought it had been lit already and my supply was the one connected to it. Grin

Re: Olympic flame

See somebody in Greece had a bad case of wind, it blew the flame out and they had to relight it with the back up, and that was even before it got out of the first ceremony

Re: Olympic flame

the first link has been updated 10 May 2012 Last updated at 12:34  it mention the flame going out
Flame out
Our correspondent James Pearce reported that the flame briefly went out as it was being transferred from the temple to the stadium, but the ceremony passed otherwise without incident in a country battling political and economic turmoil.

Re: Olympic flame

When the Torch arrives in the UK it will be carried by a total of 8000 people. A good build up to the Games. Smiley

Re: Olympic flame

Is selling your 'olympic torch' on ebay the moment you've finished your part part of the relay in the true spirit of the 'London Olympics'.

Re: Olympic flame

I didn't think the relay had got/was going/had gone to that part of Wales and it would have been a long drive to Cornwall! Is it genuine/stolen/or what? I assume the seller is pocketing all the sale proceeds as there is no mention of any of it going to charity that I could see. There is clearly some people that have more money than sense. I doubt anyone here has £150,400 for the next bid or even if they had they'd have more sense  Shocked
Let's hope HMRC catch up with the seller  Wink

Re: Olympic flame

distance no object.  the number on runner came from Essex.  one of our local runners lives hear Southend, he got a place in  Hadleigh, he thought it was where the mountain bike race was, but no, his was in Hadleigh Suffolk

Re: Olympic flame

Well that's fairly local - a bit different from near Liverpool to Cornwall and anyway I thought the people chosen were all supposedly local "heroes" or whatever term you choose to use, by local people. That's why I'm certainly cynical about where it's come from and why.
So have you put your bid in Pierre?

I bet the police officers in the escort team are going to be pretty fit by the end if this!

Re: Olympic flame

@jelv:- Is it the same police escort team all the way?, notice there was a bit of a 'punch-up' on the first leg.
Suspect the whole of the £150k auction is a hoax (or some dodgy media pimping by Locog).
I read that Locog are not ‘condoning’ the reselling of Olympic torches. Just suppose (if it were possible) to sell an Olympic torch for £10K (x 8000), that’s £80m, it’s a good way to stimulate the local economy.
