Ginnell is such a great word, yet no one outside The Best County seems to use it, my now wife looked at me like I was a total loony (don't worry I've got used that look now) when I first used the word in her company.

Re: Olde Worlde "thingy`s"

We used to have an "entry" between our house and next door.... 2 up 2 down "coronation street " type housing,  it was the only way the coalman could get to the coal house, (without going thru the front room (parlour) and thru the kitchen (scullery) into the back yard.  If an "entry" or "alley" was a "short cut" between streets, it was called a "snicket" or "snick" and if you had to go up or down a hill you went up or down "the bank".

Ginnell is such a great word

When I was a kid just a few short years ago we called it a Jennel (J as in Jack) or Pasij (typed phonetically).
If you went round a block of houses using the streets usually to see who could run the fastest you went round the lump.

@strat.... possibly, I have a tv on top of the wardrobe, with my computer station inside the wardrobe, and I just have it on to kill the silence... just happened to hear the report, but didn`t take that much notice... you could have a look a the five website, and see if it is on there !

I like the word 'chattel', as in "all my goods and chattels".
Derived from 'cattle', and currently meaning "an item of tangible movable or immovable property except real estate and things (as buildings) connected with real property".
