Old Currency find

We often hear about metal detectorists, finding hoards of old coins, and they have some "value" usually in thousands of pounds... possibly more than the original value...
So.... what if..... say... I was cleaning out the shed, ... and I came across an old wooden chest, with rusty padlock... broke the padlock, and inside found £500.00 in old white £5.00 notes...
Would I be able to take them to the bank and get todays (inflation)  value of them?  or would it be still £500.00 ?  or would I be able to auction them and get the best price ?

Re: Old Currency find

If you took them to the bank you would get the face value on them.
It would be worth checking to see if there was any additional value in them. You could look here foe example:

They abandoned the old White £5 note because it was too easy to forge, Maybe ...

sample forgery section now attached, the genuine fiver has a "white ear ring"
