Oil boiler technology !

I am astonished at the wide expertise available through this forum, so I am going to give something totally off topic a go !  My last off topic thread resulted in about thirty responses ! Roll eyes  So here goes :
Any heating technicians out there ?
I have property which I let out for the occasional week for holiday makers.  I never usually let it out in the winter but I am thinking of doing so.  However, with the cost of heating oil (I filled my tank when oil prices peaked ! Cry ), I need to be able to charge fairly for the amount of oil used.
I have looked into fitting an oil flow meter but the cost of it cannot be justified.  I have thought therefore of a work-around.  I know obviously the oil flow rate of the nozzle.  It occurs to me that if I fitted a simple electric clock to the oil pump terminals, then every time the boiler fired, the clock would start and record how long the pump ran, from which I could calculate the oil which was used before the pump stopped.
Is this a reasonable conclusion or is there some flaw in my reasoning ?
Well, it makes a change from IT topics !

Re: Oil boiler technology !

you can feed via a metered socket, this should tell you the run time and also the power, but it wont mean much

Re: Oil boiler technology !

or you could fit an hour meter such as this. We fit these to machines that have a strongly recommended service interval.
As you say fuel meters are quite pricey Shocked

Re: Oil boiler technology !

Interesting, especially the hour meter - I assume it does not have a volatile memory which means I could connect it to the oil pump terminals and it would only record when the terminals are live - better than an electric clock.
But would this be a representative way to measure the oil flow ?  That is the real question.

Re: Oil boiler technology !

For a non technical solution - fit a dipstick - a metre rule - and calculate the volume per mm step.

Alternatively, Get the "old boiler" that lives next door,    Shocked
to dip the tank every morning at 0600 (whilst the guests are still asleep)
and you will know how much has been used in a 24 hour period !  Cheesy Grin

Re: Oil boiler technology !

Following Jim's idea: most of the domestic tanks around here have a clear plastic vertical tube attached - connected in parallel to the outlet. The level of oil in the tube is of course the same level as in the tank.
As an example, my 2600 litre tank is about 1300mm tall, so a 1mm fall in level equates to a usage of 2 litres.

I would go with the hour meter, it may not be spot on, but should give a fair estimate.

Would it were either that pleasurable or that easy.  I know I was off topic, but not that far !!
Modern plastic tanks have a non-uniform shape - mainly round and but with hollow legs and sections of all shapes.  They rae extremely difficult to measure with any degree of accuracy, even witht manufacturers' data.  There can be considerable differences in even a few milimetres with a dip-stick.
