Oh the memories of the tube

[quote=http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/why-does-100-year-old-tube-technology-still-turn-audiophiles-on/]Why does 100-year-old tube technology still turn audiophiles on?
Audiophiles love affair with tube amps -- still crazy after all these years?

Re: Oh the memories of the tube

An Americanism I was not aware of, they call them tubes we call them valves.
Edit: Just read the article and it did not mention why some believe valve amps are better, I believe if's because the introduce even harmonic distortion which make the sound warmer.

Re: Oh the memories of the tube

funny thing I noticed a lot of new 3d players have valve amps in them and hearing the sound quality its actually true there is a difference in the quality compared to the none valve amp units .....

the voices also are easier to hear and the music whilst clearer is also slightly more vibrant

Ah valves. I thought this was something about the history of the underground.
Always had a good selection of valves. When the telly went on the blink it used to be back off, make a note of the unlit valve, power off, then look in the box for a similar valve.

Re: Oh the memories of the tube

this is something I got a few months ago http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BMKF188/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
it has noticeably better sound than the unit it replaced which went to a family member as it still worked perfectly except when used as a sound system through the optical input......

Re: Oh the memories of the tube

Correct me if I am wrong
Wasn't the Tubes / Valves internal components very fragile (I mean more fragile then the element in a incandescent light bulb)
Have they improved them ?Huh

Re: Oh the memories of the tube

I believe they use a different metal for the element now to make them more robust but if you were to touch one with your fingers then it will act similarly to a halogen bulb and go pop ....
everything in life is a trade off I guess

Re: Oh the memories of the tube

I thought they used to go pop (as you word it) when touched with bare fingers
I am sure DAD used a cloth when he changed them on his 19set to prevent moisture from the skin
