Of or Have

Just to get it off my chest...so to speak.
Which is correct?
1) I should of done it.
2) I should have done it
I'm surprised at how common this mistake is and most likely done because that's how many of us pronounce 'have' in every day speech (guilty of the second count).

Re: Of or Have

Usage is the arbiter of language (written or spoken) as far as i'm concerned not academia.
Given language is constantly evolving, and so much of it has been borrowed and/or [Censored] from others over the years I find it ridiculous to get caught up in such anal retentiveness.

Re: Of or Have

Ever since I got an A in GCS|E Elglish at College years ago. I've been very pedantic about grammar.
It's should have, NOT should of.
And in the same instance, your = you're in a lot of cases, I hate people who get that wrong, only reason I don't correct it more is that an old friend on Facebook who I've know for years says he'll unfriend me if I correct his grammar.

Re: Of or Have

I attained a grade "A" at O Level.  I turned up at school one morning and was told I had been entered into the exam nearly a year and a half early.
We were the first year for the new  G.C.S.E's so I wasn't too worried about the O Level but when I received my grade I was more than happy Smiley
On a downside, as the years have gone on I have started to get a little sloppy with my grammar and spelling. Having issues with sydlexia and potentially dyspraxia don't help either but hey ho, that's life. Smiley

I used to get that wrong as well, but I had excellent English tutors at College who soon put me right.

Re: Of or Have

I am never sure where to put the possessive apostrophe when the word ends in s. James' book or James's book.
A few years ago I went to Belgium with pupils on a school exchange. My host was asking me questions such as when to use shall or will. Having scraped through (grade 6) G.C.E. "O" level English Language in 1965  I couldn't answer many of her questions!

Re: Of or Have

I Guess if you had the opportunity of a good education you would find it annoying to see things written incorrectly, spelt incorrectly or had missing apostrophe's, unfortunately a lot of people did not get the opportunity of a good education and I am sure many mistakes are quite genuine and not intended to upset those who use English correctly.
Providing you are being understood do it really matter ?
Would you criticize someone who was dyslexic and spelt things incorrectly ?
