Obits

Seeing as how, many of us forumites, are close to, or passed the 3 score years and 10.... do we need these constant reminders of who has died ?
Generally speaking, they all follow the same pattern

XYZ has died...
What a shame........
Good bloke/woman
Always thought he/she would last longer
What a pity  etc etc etc...
I have enough problems with my missus, without constant Obit announcements on here..... they should be reserved for the T.V. stations, radio stations, and newspapers... where they can indulge in some "self-righteous" publicity, about the person, for 24 hours,... never to be recalled, or mentioned again....

Re: Obits

It`s already written.... but the stonemason won`t chisel it because it contains swear words !... so therefore can`t put it on the forum either.....
and also... your post, makes my point, precisely..... thank you....

I don't think it is a reminder.

Re: Obits

i didn't think my post neither confirmed nor denied your point.
however, to counter your theory about obits all being the same, here's an alternative.
Gerry aka shutter has died...
Wasn't a shame........
Not a good bloke
Surprised he lasted this long
Wasn't a pity   etc etc etc...

Re: Obits

Have to disagree on this one, shutter.
There have been three recent deaths of high profile people discussed in these forums, but overall I don't see a disproportionate number of obituary threads.
If members wish to discuss the life of a famous/infamous figure - where's the problem?

Re: Obits

This has come up before and probably will again.
I see no problem with announcing the passing of someone in the public eye.
Yes, sometimes they make me consider my own mortality but no different than had I seen it on the news or in the paper/online.
Bear in mind some of the obituaries are also of much younger persons.

Re: Obits

I Find it interesting that just after someone has passed away we here what a great person they were but months later we read in the press how bad they were, even Churchill has had a mention recently.

Re: Obits

One reason could be that they cannot defend themselves against any allegations.

Re: Obits

Ok.... let`s hear gory details about your operations, and illnesses as well, then.... let`s get really depressed, and then the Obits will make pleasant reading....
Sorry but the only operation I have had was a pain in the bum..... and still is....

True but often family members are still alive and they are the ones who suffer.

Re: Obits

@Shutter, I have to agree with your original point - in general. However,I see nothing wrong with a post along the lines of:
Xyz has died, and his death reminds of xxxx (something they did, said or are infamous/famous for).
Something that has more than the basic XYZ has died!
