Now this what I call fuel efficiency

Quote
The winning aircraft had to fly 200 miles in less than two hours and use less than one gallon of fuel per occupant, or the equivalent in electricity. The first and second place teams, which were both electric-powered, achieved twice the fuel efficiency requirement of the competition, meaning they flew 200 miles using just over a half-gallon of fuel equivalent per passenger.

My Skoda Fabia 1.9 diesel, does a pretty good job too !  Cheesy
Just come back from a weekend in Appledore, North Devon two people in the car... yesterday "bimbling"  around the coastal roads, including 1 in 3 (30%) hills with hairpin bends on blind summits, single track roads, Approx 100 mile round trip, then set of from Appledore this morning,. finally filling up at home after 307.3 miles (two days) returned average of 65.17 mpg.

Re: Now this what I call fuel efficiency

I'd be interested in knowing how they measure a gallon of electricity. Cheesy
For an equivalent they must take the calorific content of a gallon of fuel but that immediately causes questions:
What fuel?  Petrol, Diesel, Avgas, LPG, Pulverised Coal, Liquified Hydrogen, Gaseous HydrogenHuh?  Quite a range of energy content there. Shocked
Higher or Lower Calorific Value (all combusible fuels containing hyrdogen atoms have two different calorific values).
I bet they do not take into account the inefficiency in producing electricity from 'fuel',typically a loss of something like 60%.
Ignoring generating losses and equating to the Higher Calorific Value of a high specific CV fuel then electric power has a hell of a head start (other then, presumably, the weight of the batteries).  Are they allowed to 'top up' using solar within the rules? Cool
I bet my wife wouldn't be one of the occupants and still achieve the same result Lips are sealed
Still a very impressive achievement though.

Them skodas are bloody nice cars if you don't mind me saying. My neighbour used to have a black Octavia with twin turbo. it was the biz. Expensive on parts but it really changed my mind about the skoda brand.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

We all talked about Skoda in uncomplimentary terms, but that was before it was taken over by VW!
There's the difference.

Yeah I'm aware of that but have you actually seen a skoda now? - They're far more impressive than the average car out there. Absolutely incredible some of them. Real top notch stuff.
