Not wishing to suggest anything but Britain is anyones now.

2012 Olympic games - to be held in FRENCH!
Quote
The official language of the London 2012 Olympics will be French according to secret contracts seen by the Daily Telegraph.
French is the first language of the International Olympic Committee and as such that means that it must take precedence at all Olympic ceremonies including when medals are being handed out.
The presentations will also take place in English but any statement in English "should be read after the French".

Well.. We once held our own against invading countries. We even fought the might of Hitler and Germany. Now we're so weak we can't fight regulations and paperwork.
Anyone wanna lend me a few £million so I can move to mexico? Wink

Re: Not wishing to suggest anything but Britain is anyones now.

I’ve always thought that French and English are the official Olympic languages, never thought any differently, however, Wiki says:
French and English are the official languages of the Olympic Movement. The other language used at each Olympic Games is the language of the host country. Every proclamation (such as the announcement of each country during the parade of nations in the opening ceremony) is spoken in these three languages, or the main two depending on whether the host country is an English or French speaking country……
Wiki aslso says about the Olympic Charter:
French and English are the official languages of the Olympic Charter. If, at any time, there is a discrepancy between versions of the text, the French text prevails.
……..It doesn’t mention in which order but does suggest that French is the default / senior (call it as you like) language. I don’t recall in which language the announcements were made first in previous Olympics…anybody know?  Oh yeah, and does it really matter?

Surprise German has not been include. From memory the countries that have competed in all Summer and Winter Olympics only 3 languages are involved, French, English and German.

There's a problem as, according to QI, we don't have an official language.

Erm since when have I not been catching on? - I might not be as vocal as you oldman but I'm certainly not stupid or blind to whats going on!
I think holding the olympic games in french in England is pathetic. In france fair enough but here in english speaking land... what a joke.

I remember being in France when it was announced that London had beaten Paris to host 2012 Olympics.
I said sorry to our French friends who were actually pleased that their taxes wouldn't have to fund the games.

Re: Not wishing to suggest anything but Britain is anyones now.

Almost completely irrelevant but: with nearly 200,000 French expats living in London, it is one of the biggest French cities.  Cheesy
