Not a fan

Not a fan of SUV's and the like as some of you here will know, so forgive me for being more than miffed at finding a small dent a couple of days ago on the drivers door of my recently acquired 'mini Suzuki' and which common sense tells me (given the height of it) that it's been clouted by the opening door of whatever vehicle was parked next to it and yes, those SUVs are prime suspect given the size of 'em. Dents don't just appear by themselves... do they?

So when oh when are the powers that be going to make those damn parking bays wider.

I usually park well out of the way as a learned precaution, but even so and even in a half empty car park some Muppet often decides to park right alongside.

Given the standard width of a car parking space in the UK is 7.8ft and given that many of those SUV's are far wider than that, is it any wonder that cars get clouted. If my small car is the victim of the door denting meister, what chance do two of those parked alongside each other have - even allowing for those automatically folding wing mirrors many new cars seem to have these days.

Not in the interest of supermarkets, councils, or the like of NCP I don't suppose to make 'em wider neither I suppose is it the fault of SUV owners, so how's about introducing legislation to make car park owners comply by making spaces wider.

Thankfully there are wider spaces for those with a disability and those with kiddies and yes, through gritted teeth we've all seen others use them who look to have neither... even though it never pays to presume.

Re: Not a fan

People who use disabled parking bays when they are clearly NOT disabled should be fined to the full extent of the law IMO.

@MrAllen2021

It's not always clear though is it, which is why I said never presume.

Re: Not a fan

Cars in general just keep getting bigger & bigger.

Every time a new model comes out its normally bigger then the previous generation, as an example just look how big the current range of superminis are ( Corsa, Fiesta, Polo etc ) compared to the older versions ( Yaris is excluded as current one is actually smaller )

I have to fold the mirrors in on my current car to get it to fit through the door opening of my 1973 built garage.

My mother had the bodywork tidied up on her old Mondeo earlier this year - waste of time & money that was as it didn't take long until it got damaged again while it was parked in a supermarket car park.

Cars keep getting bigger because of the NCAP rating they have to pass

@HelloDuck

Not sure that makes much difference unless you want to score eleven out of ten by driving something like 'the beast' the US Presidents like to swan around in and besides, are ratings compulsory?

Folks just like the gadgets I reckon although I must admit my daughter takes great comfort in knowing her four children are safe as houses in that huge Volvo she drives.

Interesting to check though HD, our Suzuki Alto  gets three stars. 👍

PS. Dead easy to park as well. 😉

Following a coupe of serious illnesses our GP offered to help me apply for a Blue Badge. politely refusing saying "I neither feel nor look disabled"

Re: Not a fan

It's the british parking association who set the guidelines for parking space sizes. If you want to grumble, they're the people to do it to. Not that it will do you much good, the top man is an awful person to deal with. He came into my workplace once (i was working for a private parking company) and he was livid about our parking barrier payment machines. He was absolutely furious because they were old (still functional) but he didn't like the look of them.

I knew a few people within the trade including managers at various councils, i also knew a lot more than the average bod and had a very in depth conversation with him gradually ending with how inappropriate customers like to aggressively blame the attendant rather than taking it up with management etc.He literally fell right into that and immediately stopped shouting. My colleague stood there stunned.

What the prat didn't know was that i was trained in conflict management not just by the police but also a specialist conflict management company who taught very strong psychological techniques. He never really stood a chance and left rather deflated.

He's also been on BBC watchdog defending DVLA giving out peoples details (despite data protection laws) to any private parking company that coughs up a couple of quid. Hes generally not a nice man who likes to throw his weight about thinking that he's the top of his industry. They won't recommend increases in size, that would affect their members incomes (and open the flood gates for cars to increase massively in size as of the next model to be released - our roads are not american and are small!)..

In short, you need to park more strategically. Find  corner space and chuck a cone in the space next to you for instance. Failing that, buy a scruffy old van for a daily runner. You'll find not only do people give way to you a lot more on the road, they also don't like the idea of parking next to you or getting too close in general - scruffy old vans are often driven by nutters..

I'[d agree. Just look at the size of a modern 'Mini'. I saw both the old and new parked side by side and it was mind blowing as to how they can still call it a mini.

As for knocks. I've had far more caused by trolleys than other car doors. And yet my old Corsa seemed to be nigh on immune from getting dents on the side, no matter where it was parked. If only the bonnet / windscreen area had been enhanced in the same way. More chips on both caused by stones thrown up by passing vehicles. Made the front of the car look a mess.

Ever helpful. Grin Sure, I’d love to help you out. Now which way did you come in?

Re: Not a fan

Corsas are like old vans - they do have a few good drivers but they also have a lot of nutters behind the wheel who you'd rather not upset.

It's called car class lol.

People know what they can and can't bash easily without hassle. They know what they're doing, they just don't care - unless it's a car that might bring trouble their way and then they're life long respectable members of the community.

Re: Not a fan

Watching a video recently @Champnet of a young man observing a fit looking guy park his car in a hospitals disabled bay whereupon when he'd left, he went over and put one of those stickers on the windscreen which read in big letters something of along the lines of 'disabled bay only, don't park here ****.'

He then went back in his own car to wait for the guys return (and no doubt angry reaction) and yep, sure enough he returned... but this time he was pushing somebody in a wheelchair!

Fair play to the young man as he was mortified and went and across to apologise to the both of them.

As said, never presume. 🙂

Just try and imagine @7up somebody deciding to change all those lines in car parks up and down the country. It'll be worse than deciding we should all now drive on the right hand side.

Saw an 'old' mini last week @idonno and crikey, I'd forgotten just how small they were!

Re: Not a fan

I and my daughter went shopping yesterday in my old Focus.

She drove and hated parking up at two busy supermarkets.

My Focus doesn't have Parking Assist, her Mondeo does.

Her Mondeo was in for service.

Re: Not a fan

I used to regularly drive through central London. If I was in the Ford Scorpio everyone would keep their distance, If I was in the wrong lane no problem changing. if I went in the Wife’s Mini Mayfair I was a target to any amount of pushing and shoving.
