Re: No wonder she wants to wear a veil (edit - I need new glasses)

There have been at least 3 robberies on travel agents, in this area, by a man wearing a burka  Smiley
He gets caught on cctv and it's pretty obvious it's a man.

Quote
A government minister has signalled that a French-style ban on women wearing burqas is unlikely to be replicated in the UK, because, he said, the idea was "unBritish" and "undesirable".
The immigration minister, Damian Green, said banning Muslim women from covering their faces in public would be at odds with the UK's "tolerant and mutually respectful society".
The move to ban the burqa was backed by France's lower house last week. With public support, it is expected to pass through the upper house in September. The law will fine women who continue wearing the face covering €150 (£117). Men who make women wear the cover will be given a one-year prison sentence or £25,000 fine.

I wonder how a woman wearing a burqa and a hard of hearing person would communicate where the hard of hearing relies heavily on lip reading.

I seem to remember a near 6ft male bomber, burqa-clad, walking straight through Heathrow Security undetected, no doubt to do it again one day!

I remember John Simpson, BBC reporter, being the first reporter into  Afghanistan.  He was smuggled in covered in a burqa:

Re: No wonder she wants to wear a veil (edit - I need new glasses)

'Beyond Belief' on Radio 4 covered this subject last week. Speaking on the programme was an eminent Muslim scholar who was very dismissive of women using the hijab or burqa.
According to him there is nothing in their sacred text that supports any of this, the only requirement being that women should dress 'modestly' (no bad thing IMO).
In fact he was scathing about women who walk around making a statement of their faith by wearing such clothing but not actually attending the Mosque and giving due attention to the real tenets of their religion.
This attire is cultural, arising from nomadic desert tribes and in itself has nothing to do with religion.  My own belief is that there is only one issue here and that is security.
When I am in a supermarket or other shop and see people wandering around in this garb I immediately feel uneasy - after all, you can never know what is under this 'shroud'.
As has been said, nobody else is allowed to enter public buildings covered in this way so why should there be an exception?
Let them wear them in the home if they wish, but not in public places such as banks, hospitals, shops and the like - in fact anywhere where harm could be done by someone masquerading in this attire.
