Nicola Sturgeon declares 'climate emergency' at SNP conference

She was inspired after meeting young climate campaigners who had gone on strike from school.

why on earth did she not reprimand them for bunking off school ?

Re: Nicola Sturgeon declares 'climate emergency' at SNP conference

It's political highjacking of a populist movement that has until now been practically ignored.

A BBC news headline on this also reports that the SNP along with others voted down a motion by the Greens to declare a "climate emergency".

Re: Nicola Sturgeon declares 'climate emergency' at SNP conference

What exactly does declaring a climate emergency mean in practical terms?  Are leaders from every nation on earth, with their entourages and reporters in attendance, just going to fly to yet another city for yet another conference.  Surely, international conferences (of any kind) are contributing to the pollution that is being blamed for climate change.

As it looks like Scotland is going to send / export its rubbish to England I'm guessing the only climate she's concerned with doesn't extend past the Scottish borders.

Re: Nicola Sturgeon declares 'climate emergency' at SNP conference

What a pity such a serious issue is being used as some sort of popularity contest as they jostle to grab those headlines. Now the Labour led government here in Wales are at it with their own declaration of a climate change emergency and just two days before they knew that the opposition Plaid Cymru party were going to do exactly the same.

The greatest crisis ever being made flavour of the month? Tastes like it to me.

I'm worried for the people of the Middle East.  What are they going to do when petrol cars are phased out in the next couple of decades?  Date farming?  Camel safari tourism?

Ah so the wee ginger krankie senses a photo opportunity - the only thing Nicola Sturgeon is really interested in is becoming the first President of an independent Scotland, nothing more or less.

The introduction of electric cars is never going to save the planet - but it will take all the power that middle east states have away from them  ( which was the whole idea behind electric cars in the first place ).   Then they can go back to sand mining, cactus farming and camel herding again

I would guess Saudi Arabia for example must have literally trillions invested around the world especially in the US, and they certainly seem to own most of the property in London. Isn't the Shard just one of them?

Mind you, once those wells run dry or the rest or the planet tells them where they can shove their oil, the plug will be pulled on those investments. They've had us over an oil barrel for long enough.

LOL

But whatever the reasons, surely 'heads of state' signing up to this existential issue should be encouraged and crucially - held to their statements and promises  ...

... and any climate science deniers voted out as soon as humanly possible...

Everyone agree?

It is my understanding that the SNP want to keep the British monarch as head of state, in which case PM is the highest office to which she/he can aspire.  But, as they say, "Power corrupts etc."

So they want to keep the £ and the Queen but they will rejoin EU and we will have a hard border between England and Scotland - EU countries will  be able to fish in Scottish waters but will have to pass through English waters to get to them and Shetland said they want to remain part of smaller UK, this could get complicated - time to call for super-May ( or superman). Oh and Bank of England will sell English and Welsh taxpayers share of Scottish banks, which will then collapse, and Scotland will have to pay loadsa money into EU to make up for short fall after rest of UK leaves..... I would quit now Nicola, while you are ahead and getting 20% more funding per person than rest of UK.
