The small-screen doyen enjoyed a glittering career that spanned over half a decade, from becoming the first news anchor ever to be seen on TV in 1955 to scouring the country for clues on Channel 4's prime-time hit Treasure Hunt in the 1980s.

Part of what I call 'old school newsreaders' who you really listened to and who presented the news with great command and respect.
I seem to remember his voice was digitised for a voice chip used in BBC Micro computers back in the eighties.
