New volcanic eruption shuts Iceland airport

Quote
The Icelandic authorities have shut the country's main airport after the nation's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, began erupting.
A plume of smoke has risen 20km (12 miles) into the sky.
Iceland's Meteorological Office says the eruption should not cause widespread disruption to air traffic.
Simon Calder, travel editor for the Independent said "the eruption has been pretty fierce".

Iceland has now closed their airspace for the time being.  The ash is not thought to be as serious as last year.  It is heavier and therefore won't travel as far.
Transatlantic flights unaffected as of 2p this afternoon.

Maybe this is the end of the world starting, just a day late?
I don't think the world id about to end though, I'm so sure of this that I'll offer anyone 1000000 to 1 odds against it happening.  Any takers?  Grin

Maybe of interest:-
http://andvari.vedur.is/athuganir/eldingar/grimsvotn2011/
the maps and chart show lightening strikes per hour.
The highest 1-hour lightning count was 2198 strokes between 00:00-01:00 on 22 May 2011. For comparison, the highest 1-hour count during the Eyjafjallajökull eruption was 22 between 08:00-09:00 on 16 May 2010
edit: wonder if Obama's visit could be curtailed

All the airlines seem to have accepted the restrictions except
[quote=http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13513981]Ryanair has objected to an order from Irish officials to ground some flights to and from Scotland on safety grounds.
Prediction: In order to keep the charges on their website as low as possible RyanAir will show the price for taking off only, landing will be a chargeable extra. That way they will be covered if an aircraft fails to reach its destination after running in to an ash cloud.
