New deadly health virus

A LETHAL virus spread through coughing, sneezing and touching has now claimed 39 lives — sparking fears of a global pandemic.
The coronavirus — dubbed Middle East Respiratory Syndrome — is thought to be eight times deadlier than SARS, which killed 800 worldwide in 2003.
MERS has already spread rapidly through Saudi Arabia and Europe and left doctors baffled over its cause.
Infectious disease specialist Dr Trish Perl, who reported the shock findings, said: “In the right circumstances the spread could be explosive.”
Sixty cases have been identified in Saudi Arabia, with others in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Qatar and Tunisia.
Most of the infected are thought to have a direct connection to the Middle East.
Symptoms include fever and coughing for several days followed by pneumonia. The cause is unknown but tests link it to a disease found in bats and spread by bitten goats or camels.
Others fear it may stem from food contaminated by the bats, such as dates.
Dr Clemens Wendtner, who treated a victim in Munich, said: “Our patient got everything possible and it still didn’t help him.”

Re: New deadly health virus

Throughout history their have been different types of plagues that have wiped out large numbers  of the population, with antibiotics we foolishly thought we were protected from anything but nature seems to have a way of fighting back in an effort to reduce the population.
Despite our knowledge their will never be an end to the various diseases that reduce the population and it may well be that in the (hopefully) distant future a man made disease or virus will finally affect everybody.

I provide IT and systems support for a company who make medical / disinfectant wipes and other products used to kill these viruses on contact.
Every time there is an outbreak like this there are huge orders - typically a years worth in a couple of months.
The computer systems always wait until these outbreaks to to start playing up as well ......

Re: New deadly health virus

A friend of ours is a senior nurse out in Saudi in a hospital. The infection rate figures are being obscured. One of those who died is a doctor at the hospital who treated a patient with the disease. Definitely not a minor panic and there is no real treatment.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.
