New Road Fund Disc

Current disc expires 31/3/14 and new one, bought online, arrived early last week.
Normally I just put the new one in as soon as I receive it but this time I decided to check up on the legality of this and found I have actually been breaking the law.
[quote=http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/car-tax-rules]A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from.
Strange that there is no reminder of this fact attached to the new disc.
So, I can leave the new disc on the shelf or even in the glove compartment but what if I forget to change it over on the 1st? Should I actually go out at midnight to change it to keep within the letter of the law?
I will leave it in the glove compartment and set a reminder on my phone.

Re: New Tax Disc

Hmm didn't know that but suppose it sort of makes sense...
Police/DVLA don't use them anymore anyway they use the database, from 1st October you won't get or be required to display a paper tax disc...

Re: New Tax Disc

I found out last year when I removed 10 years of tax disc from the holder that only 3 colours are used in rotation. Walking down the road today I had to do a double take as a car parked on the road had the correct colour for this year but it expired in 2011. Was it an attempt to trick enforcing officers that the car had a valid disc?

Re: New Tax Disc

I don't remember seeing a warning about not displaying the new disc either when buying it. Then again, I wasn't looking for one.
Edit: Changed title

Also from the DVLA website
"If you have any remaining months left on your current paper tax disc from 1 October 2014, you can either remove the tax disc from your vehicle or display the disc until it expires. "

You can apply from the 5th day of the month in which your current tax disc runs out. Your new tax disc will come into force on the first day of the next month and you should not display it on your vehicle until then.
