Never thought I'd see these again.

True story folks.

Looking into the window of our local towns antique shop this morning, and clearly displayed off to one side were several large to medium sized golliwog dolls!

Are these sort of things still allowed to be sold? Not that I would go in and complain, but I can imagine plenty of places where people quite rightly would.

Nothing much surprises me these days, but this certainly did.

I'm quite surprised that escaped the naughty word filter!
I must have been really bad in a previous life as this was my 3rd ISP in a row that used lithium.
Now you're stuck with me because my new ISP doesn't run a forum Cheesy

Re: Never thought I'd see these again.

I think the word "golliwog" is what upset people the most as instead of being the name for the dolls, some half-witted people were using it as a racist insult, and as per usual, it's the few making trouble for the majority... Roll eyes

But then, it's not as daft as people being "insulted" by morris dancers blacking up their faces, not realising it was a tradition to do so by miners who didn't want to be identified as dancers so they covered their faces in coal dust, which is of course black, rather than used it to intimidate certain creeds... Re: Never thought I'd see these again.

Well Robertson Jam stopped using them on their products some years back so there must have been some issue, only it was not one they would not openly admit if memory serves. A pity after so long, but they were without doubt a form of racial stereotyping even back then.

These were on a small town's high street in west Wales, but put them in a shop window anywhere in say Wandsworth or even Cardiff......

Re: Never thought I'd see these again.

In Wales, well that explains it.Smiley

The last time I was in Wales I happened to wander into a back street pub where no one would speak to "English me" except a local plumber. Who explained that although he had lived there with his wife and kids for more than a dozen years he was still an outsider. Though that was not the exact word he used.

And when I asked about all the jukebox records with "Charles" in the title I was told they were all about Prince Charles. But not in a good way.

But I expect things have changed as that was more than a few decades ago.

Really?

A similar thing happened to me in London quite recently, only the plumber was Polish and the language Chinese Wink

Golliwogs were nowhere to be seen, thankfully.

A couple of days ago, I saw one of those Meschersmitt Bubble cars coming towards me on the road,.... haven`t seen one of those for about 25 years.... used to be quite popular when they came out.... and see a lot of them

Re: Never thought I'd see these again.

I remember seeing a Sinclair C5 on a main road.

The only one I ever saw actually on a public road.

Re: Never thought I'd see these again.

They laughed when the C5 came along, but for some reason, people took the G-wizz seriously............ Crazy2

Re: Never thought I'd see these again.

Did they laugh? I seem to recall they were seen as a bit of fun. Certainly a lot less like a car than the G-wizz.
