You obviously don't appreciate just how cold the North Sea is even in summer or even how polluted that part can be

I do... having first went to sea, in a Yorkshire Cobble, from Robin Hoods Bay.... and also used to collect the coal from the beach at Whitley Bay, when on hols with my great aunt !....

Nearly the same as me.
I used to go fishing from Marske beach on a double ended coble http://www.flickr.com/photos/74593159@N05/7402197956/ ; http://www.flickriver.com/places/United+Kingdom/England/Marske-by-the-Sea/
and we used to collect "sea coal" after a storm
