I saw this news item on TV today and had just one emotional reaction.....mild frustration.

I'm no longer surprised by these things and am indifferent to them.
If they want to live by the gun, they can die by the gun too.
Until they grow up and realise that they're (the guns) not protecting anyone that'll be my stance.

What sort of mentality do you have to leave a loaded gun unattended in a car ?
Sadly the ones who suffer are usually innocent people.
I can never see a time when guns will be banned in the states irrespective of the number of innocent people who are injured or killed by guns.

More to the point a loaded gun with the safety catch off!

I probably shouldn't admit this, but I laughed when I saw the headline earlier, it proves the theory of evolution, survival of the smartest, after all, you have to be pretty low on intelligence to leave a loaded gun with the safety off in a car next to a child who is in the grabby years and thought it was a toy, it's just asking for ol' Grim the Reaper to pay a visit...

But, apparently, it wasn't the mother who left the gun in the car.
Tragic but surprised there weren't other fatalities considering she was driving on the highway.

The driver is responsible for the contents of the car they're driving, if she didn't notice it (or did and just thought it was fine to leave a loaded gun with the safety catch off by a child), then technically speaking, it's her own fault for not making it a safe environment for herself or her child...
After all, how often do you hear "It in't mine guv" on them police shows when chavs in ricers get pulled only for the police to find drugs stashed away in the car, and they end up arrested...

Valid point but how many of us do check the contents of the car before driving off

I wonder why?? I know many Americans and they are far from stupid.
Most Americans I know carry a gun but you would not know it. They see it as self protection. I was at lunch last week and I was the only one of five not to have a gun.

What gets me is the apparent look of surprise or shock on the faces of US citizens interviewed by TV news crews as witnesses to the event.

All States allow a person to have a gun but the rules vary from State-to-State. One of the most common policies is what we have in Florida which is concealed carry weapon (CCW).
Some States allow weapons to be visible.
