Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

ITV news at 10 announced that Morrisons has bought 49 Blockbuster stores, with the intention of turning them into "convenience stores".....
Good news..... About time Tesco had some competition in this market.
Bad news... independent owners of convenience stores might/will suffer, if they are located too close to them.

Re: Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

Have not seen any "local convenience stores" with the ASDA or Sainsbury brand name in this area.....

Re: Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

Me neither. I didn't know ASDA do small convenience stores, I've seen the odd rare Sainsburys but no ASDA or Morrisons. Smart move for the latter though as already stated, it's going to hurt our smaller retailers even more.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Have the impression the Morrisons brand of convenience stores is going to be a franchise?

The Bradford-based retailer will use the purchase to build a new convenience store franchise, especially in London and the South East.

Basically independent with the supply chains sorted:=

Re: Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

ASDA bought the Nertto chain of stores a few years ago.  There were 193 stores in the chain but it ASDA was ordered to sell 25% of them on competition grounds.

Re: Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

Our local convenience store was taken over by Tesco a few years ago and was a vast improvement over the privately owned days.
Main Tesco store is only about 1.5 miles away.

Re: Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

We had a 'local' Netto store which is now an ASDA, a mini version of the ASDA superstore 5 miles away.
There's a Blockbuster across the road and large, newly refurbished Morrisons around the corner.

Are Tesco convenience stores Tesco owned or a Franchise?

Re: Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

Our local store is, to best of my knowledge, owned and operated by Tesco.

Re: Morrisons buy Blockbuster stores

The stores are owned by Tesco but operated as a separate entity.  Prices are dearer than in a normal Tesco for a start.  Also if they sell fuel it is branded (Esso in our local Tesco express) and doe not attract points.
Also because the units are under 3000 sq.ft they can trade longer house on a Sunday.
