More unwanted EU controls, on vacuum cleaners !

To quote from today's Daily Mail:
"Now Europe wants to make it harder to clean your carpets with new rules BANNING powerful vacuum cleaners.
Bureaucrats in Brussels are trying to make it harder to clean your home by banning the sale of powerful vacuum cleaners, it emerged today.
New European Commission rules will outlaw any new machine with a motor that exceeds 1,600 watts from next September to make them more energy efficient.
Currently the average vacuum cleaner on the market has a wattage of 1,800, but by 2017 that figure will have to fall to 900W.
Regulations will ban any new machine that exceeds 1,600W next year
That figure will fall further to 900W by 2017, the EC says
At present, the average vacuum cleaner has a 1,800W motor
Vacuum cleaners will also be graded from A to G on energy efficiency"

Whilst I think it is sensible for us to be presented with information to help us decide which appliance to purchase by grading these products A to G, I am not happy with the EU yet again telling us what we can and can't do. Everyone will end up using more energy by using their under powered cleaners for twice as long trying to get their carpets clean !

To be honest with you, the majority of power used by a vacuum cleaner is wasted as heat so there is a huge amount of room for improvement to get a more efficient system.
I'll just have to put my heating on to compensate for the lack of extra heat every week from using the hoover ........

The vacuum cleaners in the eighties were mostly around 500/550 watts as I recall and didn't do too bad a job so I'm sure we will manage. Better do as we are told I guess  Roll eyes

Better tighten our belts, as Bissell just get worse as more regulations filter through.

Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: More unwanted EU controls, on vacuum cleaners !

In truth, these vacuum cleaners will only be illegal in the UKES - United Kingdom Except Scotland - thanks to the Parliamentiary Home Energy Persecution Act 2018  - A gold plated interpretation of the EU Directive by Lord Dyson and an ivory tower of civil servants with gold plated solid gold pensions. Meanwhile the Italians, French, Irish and Spaniards will use the diirective as a means to reduce their toilet paper 'arseprint'. Exempt from HEPA will be 'vacuum cleaners classified for industrial use'.
Cool Of course, we assume by 2017 we can still afford to plug the vacuum cleaner into the wall.
