More Nimbys

British International Helicopters (BIH) wants to move from Penzance to St Just to save money and cut journey times.

Vice chairman of the Land's End Aerodrome Action Group John Passingham said

"Finally, there are environmental concerns. We are very concerned at the increase in pollution and the increased noise that these helicopters will bring."

So the shorter distance and reduced flight time is going to increase pollution? Yeah, right!

Saw this too about opposition to a jetty in Helford by holiday home owners who aren't there most of the time.

Errr rights of full time residents/businesses first I think.

Re: More Nimbys

That's not far from where I live. The Land's End aerodrome has been an active airfield for years, with fixed wing flights to Scilly. It is virtually on the cliff top, so it is normally windy, so any localised increase in pollution will very soon be blown back to Penzance where it was before!
Tourists going to Scilly won't care as they just have to drive an extra fifteen minutes past Penzance. The biggest effect will be on people travelling from Scilly to Penzance to go shopping, who will face a bit longer taxi or bus ride into town.
From an environmental point of view this move can only be good. Half the flight time = half the fuel burnt.

Absolutely. All they want to do is build a small jetty to land their fish, and the second home owners who are only there for two weeks a year are objecting. Rather selfish, I think.

Do you mean Scillonians or tourists going shopping via the helicopter? Given the cost, I would not thought any Scillonian would use it for shopping!

The Helicopters used are old and expensive to maintain, they also do not carry many people, the airplanes used are quieter and can carry more ... I can see them wanting to stop using the helicopters.
I know people who work there. I can walk to the heliport from my parents house.

The Penzance heliport site, which is on a prime site next to the sea and close to the A30, is to be sold by BIH.

Now we see the motivation.

There is in fact a Tesco's right next to the Heliport in Penzance.  Lips are sealed

I meant Scillonians. OK, I know they wouldn't do it every week to go to the supermarket.
