Maths Question

Hopefully someone can figure out how to phrase the question so I can obtain the correct answer.  We have 8 different objects which have a differing possible values, A can be 1 2 3 or 4 and C can be 1 2 3 4 5 6, the options are :
A (4)
B(4)
C(6)
D(2)
E(6)
F(6)
G(4)
H(4)
Working down the list we can have A1, B1, C1, D1, E1, F1, G1, H1, then we change H to 2, then 3, then 4, then we change G to 2 and H to 1, then H2 etc.. until we eventually wind up with 44626644.  I can't quite figure out how many different possible combinations there are, 8^36 gives a silly number, there is probably a really easy solution that I'm not quite getting, so any hints tips or even the solution? Cheesy

Re: Maths Question

Isn't it 4*4*6*2*6*6*4*4?
= 110592

Re: Maths Question

I did think of that, but the number doesn't seem right, way too high.  I may have to work it out with notepad and a lot of head scratching.  I'm expecting the number to be at most in the low 100's not into the 100k's which is why it's hurting my head.  Maybe excel has a function.........

Re: Maths Question

Multiplying the numbers will give you the correct value of possible outcomes.

Re: Maths Question

Yup, appears so. What kind of value were you aiming for? Maybe it can be achieved by dropping a letter or two.

Re: Maths Question

I wasn't aiming for a particular value I just didn't realise the possible combinations would produce such a high number of possibilities.  I added all the rest (there were more that I was too lazy to add up) and it ended up being 1.7940724013968954622158869784166e+32.  I'm playing FFXIV and people were complaining that there were not enough character customization options, I think with that figure they may be slightly incorrect as that's just the possible combinations for just 1 race (Lalafell Dunesfolk) so there are, umm... I'm not going to attempt working out the total number of possible combinations for all the different races, my calculator would melt.
