Major death of cattle in South Dakota because of early blizzard

I haven't seen this on any of the major news outlets but it sounds really horrific http://rapidcityjournal.com/news/article_558ef3ed-e941-5054-bc6b-115e04e10886.html

Tens of thousands of cattle lie dead across South Dakota on Monday following a blizzard that could become one of the most costly in the history of the state’s agriculture industry.

Re: Major death of cattle in South Dakota because of early blizzard

When our kids were in their early teens we had half term holiday in Montana/Dakota about this time of year. We were caught up in one these early blizzards. We encountered about 45 cm of snow in an afternoon/evening following a bright sunny morning with an air temperature of around 9 Deg Fahrenheit. I can attest when it decides to snow there the weather does not mess about. Fortunately we'd rented a 4x4 Suburban and were able to escape the freeway to the shelter of a motel in the middle of nowhere. They were equipped for the weather and had standby generators which took over then the power lines came down.  The local country folk were also piling into the motel when their power dropped out.  By the following mid-day snow ploughs (plows) had cleared routes on the main roads.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Major death of cattle in South Dakota because of early blizzard

There were reports on the national news about this.  It's a little early for this type of weather. By contrast I have been in the US for the past 4 weeks and had daytime temperatures up to 91°F. This last week fall has arrived and the temperature this morning was a cool 57° at 7pm. Funny to see locals standing at the bus stops in overcoats Roll eyes
How's the UK weather?

bison (buffalo) are evolutionarily adapted to such weather.  maybe they should farm them instead.  notice how the cattle are all lying singly.  they might have stood a chance had they huddled like penguins.  such creatures are for the plains of africa, not those of dakota.
