Main Road Traffic Reports

The Highways agency have been installing average speed sensors on a lot of roads that are linked into reporting systems. for instance my Sat Nav has a radio link via Classic FM that reports delays ahead on selected roads.
The info is also available on Google maps

and Frixo  http://www.frixo.com/ that also reports the average speeds near you - frightening sometimes, upgraded every 3 mins

The diagram below shows live average speeds on the A12.
M25  61mph
M25  73mph
A1023  68mph

Re: Main Road Traffic Reports

Interesting technology pierre but, I'm not sure what use it is for the average driver, unless it is identifying individual registration numbers!! (it might not now, but may well do in the future I suppose)
My SatNav uses the same delays reporting system as yours, how does this tie in with average speed info?

Re: Main Road Traffic Reports

I think that the cameras do in fact look at the car registration and work out the speed between cameras as do these they do not book you for speeding, But I have a suspicion that the police link the info into the PNCS to check for illegal vehicles, near here in Essex the cameras are in small tubes about 100mm dia by 500mm on a pole
the Frixo site says the info is available on Mobile phone wep , take a look round it has a lot more than average speeds

Re: Main Road Traffic Reports

They record a portion of your number plate to enable them to track you between gantries, but its nothing to do with speed or any other type of traffic enforcement.
They are owned and operated by Trafficmaster.

Re: Main Road Traffic Reports

the original ones were indeed traffic master and are usually green, but other seem to be on the increase, the multi ones on the gantry are the London Congestion Zone ones, also to check Commercials in the Pollution Zone

Re: Main Road Traffic Reports

Uhmm! I rather thought this was a system linked into Highways Agency to warn of traffic congestion, a bit like the variable system used around Heathrow on the M25.
Although if it does indeed read registrations then there are obvious connotations of Big Brother watching. However, I thought that Police speed measuring devices were marked or warned as "Police" cameras.

Re: Main Road Traffic Reports

I have to say, I've no objection whatever if cameras are being used by any third party to deal with traffic congestion, especially if it works! however in my experience traffic congestion for most reasons on motorways simply brings traffic to a stop, using the M25 variable linked speed limit sign system wouldn't do much good as there aren't enough escape routes between junctions, and anyway a diversion off a motorway usually only clogs up the minor roads nearby. If congestion is caused by an accident (and it often is) it is about time the Police dealt with the aftermath, particularly their addiction to measurement and assessment, much quicker than they do presently. Exactly why does an overturned truck on an off-slip road should keep a motorway closed for most of a day? If specialised lifting equipment will be needed, that will take most of the day to arrive at the scene, does the motorway have to remain closed? if so why?
