Re: London is a great such place to live.

I used to live a block up from the Ledru-Rollin Metro station in Paris just along the road from the Bastille, and I loved it, but boy was it noisy. I eventually took myself out to Montrouge where I worked and where is was more suburban, but meant I had to reverse my commute to the weekends so I could idle them away on the Place de la Concorde watching life go by.

Given the opportunity now to return I’d be packing my bags before you could blink.

Re: London is a great such place to live.

As much as London has going for it I think it's let down by the inability to get from A to B without spending an inordinate amount of time stuck in traffic. The tube is all very well, when coming in from the burbs, but going from a tube to an office can take just as much time as the original tube journey did!

i would have said the one thing (maybe the only thing) that london does have going for itself is public transport.

@chenks76 - That's very true, but London traffic is hideous at the best of time and there's not always a bus lane where you need it.

Re: London is a great such place to live.

My wife and I spent a week as guests of relatives in a house on the Balls Pond road many years ago.

The roadside market was interesting but we couldn't help but feel the pressure of the big city.

We were glad to get back to Sheffield.

@chenks76

Really?? You need to get out more.

I was in London yesterday. Had dinner and then visited the theatre.

Walked around the West End. Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square were buzzing. Visitors from all over the world.

London has some of the best museums in the world. Plenty of places to visit and an excellent selection of places to eat. There's a fantastic choice of theatre that is unequally anywhere else.

London is a wonderful and vibrant city but I just wouldn't want to live there again.

Re: London is a great such place to live.

Since moving from London to Derbyshire our annual motor mileage went from 2,500 miles to around 14,000 a year. The public transport is definitely better in London. But, despite the greater motor mileage our car insurance costs were reduced.

Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

The topic is London and you mention London specifically in your reply.

Oi, @chenks76 - I may be biased (Sheffield born & bred), but even with decimation of our industry and a council that can't make up it's mind about the city centre, it's still a great place to live.
