London Olympics - One Year to Go

Today marks one year to go to the start of The London Olympics. There is a ceremony in Trafalgar Square tonight and our diving medal hopeful, Tom Daley, will be the first to dive into the newly constructed pool at the Aquatic Centre.
Olympics
With the completion of the Aquatic Centre Seb Coe said all the fixed venues in Stratford are now complete.

Re: London Olympics - One Year to Go

The project is massively over budget and it will cause massive road/tube disruption for seven weeks in the East End of London. Transport For London are predicting already delays for regular commuters. So far no one has predicted the cost of the travel disruption nor the cost of reduction in tourism which (historically) occurs with the Olympics.
If you inadvertently drive in one of the "Olympic Lanes" you'll get fined £1000. It doesn't help that many roads in the locality will be closed.

Re: London Olympics - One Year to Go

The traffic problem was discussed on LBC this morning.  There is a working party set up to look into this.  Businesses are also being advised to alter working times of employees and to deliver/receive goods outside normal working hours. This will be of some help but not a lot IMO.

Re: London Olympics - One Year to Go

as someone who commutes to London, I'm not looking forward to it. It would have made me less enthused about the olympics, if that were possible.

Re: London Olympics - One Year to Go

I suppose it's correctly named the London Olympics as it has little to offer the rest of the country.

Is it massively over budget?

"2003: Tessa Jowell launches bid in May telling MPs it will cost £2.375bn - including a 50% contingency"
"2005: Bid succeeds in July with "prudent" estimate of preparing for games of £2.4bn "
Present:  The total budget remains £9.298bn
Yes it is well over budget, moving the goal posts doesn't change history.

Yes you are right about it being over budget.  The figures you quote were in the LBC report this morning.

Is the Mountain bike course being left in place after the Olympics?
Thinking about trying out the Whitewater course in the next couple of months, just have to do some weight training and hose the grim of the kayak first.

Re: London Olympics - One Year to Go

A lot happening today.  David Cameron has visited the beach volleyball site at Horse Guards Parade. The design of the medals unveiled in Trafalgar Square and  Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, will officially invite the world to visit the Games before  Pop band The Feeling, gospel choirs and Radio 1 DJ Kissey Sell Out will perform. Exactly a year to go and it looks like 366 fun packed days ahead.

Re: London Olympics - One Year to Go

@itsme, the original plan was for it to be put back to its state but that might have changed.

After the Olympic Games the temporary structure of the course will be taken down. The Essex County Council and other partners will then look at what part of the Olympic Course will be left in place for future use. Some more information concerning the mountain bike track can be found on our Hadleigh Farm page, in addition to our page on Hadleigh Castle
