Little competition - no prizes though!

Anybody noticed the number under my avatar?
Anybody figured out the significance yet?
Just something to warm up the grey matter on a winters evening.

Re: Little competition - no prizes though!

It is also one of those rare instances where Google can't find a result.

Re: Little competition - no prizes though!

Google gets a little confuddled by numbers.
The real question I suppose is whether you could have worked it out in your head, of if you would need a calculator to get to the final number. (I used a calculator - my mathematics skills are far from strong)

Didn't need a calculator, copy and paste works fine for me  Grin.

Not to figure the answer, but now you know what it relates to - could you have worked out that number in your head.
I'm suspecting that you don't actually know how or why that number points to where it does.

Anybody care to explain what the number actually is?

It's the IP address of the Community server in decimal format.

Yep, so back to the question, could you convert the dotted octet into a single decimal number in your head?
I know a couple of folks who can more or less instantly do it - I have to think carefully to convert a single binary octet into decimal.

Re: Little competition - no prizes though!

Why would I want to when Firefox accepts the number in decimal format?

Re: Little competition - no prizes though!

Of course it does, since it has to convert it to binary to do anything with it anyway no matter what you type in.
Although oddly, binary strings don't appear to work.
http://3232235521 does work
http://11000000101010000000000000000001 does not appear to.

Re: Little competition - no prizes though!

I am not surprised binary strings do not work in this instance as Firefox as no way of knowing that it is not a decimal number that you have entered. What I am not sure about is how you define binary numbers instead of decimal numbers.

There are 10 types of people those that understand binary and those that don't.

Re: Little competition - no prizes though!

No, its 11 - Those than can understand it, those that can explain it to others, and those that think the other 10 are bonkers.
