Kindle edition

There's a book that I was thinking of buying but there is a Kindle edition available.
I don't have a kindle but am wondering if there is a compatible reader for Android but, most importantly, are these downloads somehow tied-in to Kindle machines in such a way that they cannot be read on any other system?

Re: Kindle edition

you can have multiple platforms and read kindle books via the free kindle app(s) I have one on my desktop linked to my other half's kindle and our shared laptop so I can read something even if were away from home without needing to worry about re-finding the bookmark (so long as the account gets synced before the trip starts)

Re: Kindle edition

Thanks for the tips.
Took me a little while to understand that you don't actually download the book!
Kindle app now installed on tablet and phone and all's well reading from the tablet. Not yet checked the phone as it's off and in the other room.

Re: Kindle edition

it depends on the settings you pick, I download books on all my accounts so that it doesn't matter if the internet goes down whilst reading, rather than using the cloud reading service which doesn't work when not at home ......

Re: Kindle edition

New to this Kindle-type lark - I had always said I've never read books, study, etc on a tablet now I am eating my words Roll eyes
Anyway, just to test things I disabled wifi on my tablet and could still read the book so all seems well.
Thanks for the input.

Re: Kindle edition

This will fall down to personal preference but I always avoid Kindle if possible because of the walled garden situation. This was one reason I liked my old Sony reader: it handled multiple formats (although not kindle) as does the Kobo I recently bought my niece. As others have pointed one advantage with a tablet is you can get different apps for different vendors and have the best of both worlds.

Re: Kindle edition

I've been happy with my Kindle and it has resurrected my interest in reading.
My problem has been with the books I read.
I often chose a book which happens to be book one of a trilogy.
I download and read books one and two then discover book three is in the planning or writing stage and in a couple of cases the third book might be 2 or 3 years away.
When I've finished book two I want to start on book three or my interest in the series fades.

Re: Kindle edition

I don't have a Kindle, but I do have KindleForMac on my iMacs.
I have downloaded an extensive library, mostly from Amazon, but have not yet had time to read any of them !!
The Amazon Kindle Library is very easy to use on the Computer.
Every Book Cover is shown in Colour

I also have a Kindle to PDF converter, to use Kindle books on Tablet etc.
But it doesn't convert every Kindle Book.
But as always, Time to Read !!!
Possibly on Holiday ?

Just get the Kindle app for your tablet - no need to convert anything then.

Re: Kindle edition

Perverse as it may sound, I could, if I wanted to, print out / forward to Google Drive sections of tech / travel books !!
From iMac or hudl.
AFAIK, I cannot do that within Kindle easily.

But the main reason is to read books on Desktops available in Hotels, where Kindle may not be installed !!!
And where I can access Google Drive, Cloud, emails containing the PDFs etc
