Just wondering why...

... there are speed signs reminding us of current restrictions within viewing distance of another sign indicating the maximum speed limit is changing. See example.
Seems like a waste of a sign to me Undecided

Re: Just wondering why...

because legally the reminder signs have to be at a minimum distance otherwise the limit isn't enforceable

I remember I newspaper article showing that compared to some countries we are sign crazy.

Re: Just wondering why...

Yeah... I have noticed that, many times....  however, my biggest "gripe" about signage, is the lack of 30 mph signs in 30 ,limit zones that "could" be 40.....  ( and sneaky speed cameras mounted "just out of sight, around a corner, or behind a tree)... or so-called "safety camera" police vans parked in similar locations, to catch the unwary 32 mph or 42mph drivers )....
It seems that it is to the advantage of the police traffic cops, to collar people breaking the 30 limit, as demonstrated many times on the telly progs.... but strangely you don`t see many, or any, "naughty motorists" being stopped for speeding in 40 limit areas... on the telly... ( not saying the police only target 30 limit areas, if you get my drift..... )

Re: Just wondering why...

No-one gets penalised for doing just 32 mph in a 30 mph zone - it just does not happen.
Thresholds in my area are 30 + 3 + 2 = 35.  A safety camera will operate at 36 mph in a 30mph zone.
Hit a pedestrian at 30 mph - 45% will be killed.
Hit a pedestrian at 40 mph - 85% will be killed. (Source: UK Dept of Transportation).
That's why we have speed limits in built-up areas.

you can be done for 32mph though.
the "threshold" is entirely discretionary.

I thought the root of the problem was pedestrians on roads instead of pavements.

This is correct. From memory a speedo is accurate to plus 10% and this is accounted for in the calculation you give.

Re: Just wondering why...

the speedo shows you driving faster than you really are.
so if you speed says 30 you're actually doing a little less (not by much though as they are much more accurate now assuming you don't modify the car by changing the wheels etc.)

The UK law is based on the EU standard, with some minor changes.  A speedo must never show less than the actual speed, and must never show more than 110% of actual speed + 6.25mph.  So if your true speed is 40mph, your speedo could legally be reading up to 50.25mph but never less than 40mph.  Or to put it another way, if your speedo is reading 50mph, you won’t be doing more than 50mph but it’s possible you might actually only be travelling at 40mph.

This is how it works.

Or not as the speedo needle on my old Maestro used to wave back and forth like semaphore flags at lower speeds.
I just used to keep an eye on the rev counter when near speed cameras.

The speedo needle on my dad's old Ford Anglia used to jump around like nobody's business at most speeds Crazy

Re: Just wondering why...

When I were a lad and we'd all just started driving, I remember a mate telling us he would never be done for speeding.  We all scoffed - how could he possibly be sure?
He said he never exceeded the speed limit.
Which is actually pretty easy to do manage these days if you have cruise control.
