Is this worth buying?

I have an option on a new motherboard & processor (new to me that is)
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P Motherboard with AMD FX4100 Processor
Any clues on how good/bad/indifferent this is?
As a comparison I am running a Dell 9200 with a Intel core2 6700 running at 2.66Ghz with an Nvidia GT610.

Re: Is this worth buying?

Gigabyte are Good MB,s , the Fx 4100 is a solid CPU i have had one previously.
The thing to remember is what Ram you have ? is it the same for the new MB DDR3 , you may also have to check your PSU for same connections  Wink
Asus ROG Hero Vii Z97 , Intel i5 4690k ,ROG Asus Strix 1070,
samsung 850evo 250gig , WD black 2 TB . Asus Phoebus sound ,

Re: Is this worth buying?

if you play any games or do photo/video editing then you will probably find the processor underpowered, however if you just do word processing /spread sheets stream films and browse t'internet then it will probably be fine,
I bought a similar combo last year for my youngest, except his is an A8 chip and I added in a separate graphics card because I needed the HDMI output it offered

Re: Is this worth buying?

It will need new ram and a new case (I have plenty of cases though) as the Dell is a BTX board. (Remember the "New" standard Intel brought out years ago with no ports apart from usb)
As to playing games, well I play Xcom and Civ V currently, so it should be faster with it. As to the other bits you suggest I do all that on this one anyway.
Got to see if it is worth the money at the moment as I will have to shell out £30+ for 4Gb of ram.
Must admit at the moment I think it will have to wait for next year before I upgrade this box.
Esp as this is the 10th! time in the past hour my router has rebooted itself, so a new router might be a better buy!

Re: Is this worth buying?

Way too expensive for me. I was looking @£50 for that bundle +the ram. But with the router playing silly bug**rs it looks like it will be getting replaced first.
Had some cash back from my house insurance just paid so had some spare cash, but not that much.

Re: Is this worth buying?

Nah I need a fibre router preferably a combined one. Currently using the TG589vn v3  which has been solid until this past few months, daily reboots were common, but last night it was just going silly between 6-7 when I gave up on it.
I changed the psu in case it was dying but it still rebooted several times after that.
Current stats:
2.1 Type VDSL
2.2 Status Up
2.3 Uptime 0 days 3 hours 3 mins 7 secs
So managed to stay up for past 3 hours  Shocked
Mind you someone trying to hack it:

Re: Is this worth buying?

If you are running Windows it may complain about a change to m'board and processor; especially if it was a Dell OEM version. That could end you with another big expense.  .
The old processor should do most things pretty well.
I have a 7 year old desktop with 6600 and am just in the process of moving over to a laptop with i7.
Smaller jumps aren't worth the effort in my mind; and there are only a few specialist tasks my old machine doesn't handle adequately.
You may do better to invest in an SSD which will improve your current machine a lot, and which you will be able to move into a new machine when you eventually upgrade.

Re: Is this worth buying?

Nah not running win not for many years.
Linux will run even with a complete change of video from NV to Amd just not with the dedicated driver  Grin
It will be next year before I am in anyway near getting a new setup, when my endowment comes up (mortgage paid years ago, kept the endowment running), then I will be able to get a new board but this look interesting at the mo as in interim update, might have been as much as 50+% faster but if I have to get a new router then it is back on the burner again.
My ping graph from yesterday:

So for 4 hours it was unusable.

Re: Is this worth buying?

stupid question maybe but how long have you had your router and where did you get it from ?
I ask since they only started getting sold about 12 months ago on broadband buyer, so if that's when you got yours it would still be within the 2 year warranty period.
on an aside the broadbandbuyer site has them listed as only having 10/100 Ethernet ports that would make them a poor choice for wired equipment that transfers files across the network .....

Re: Is this worth buying?

I got it from here, a PN trial. I did enquire about a replacement but they said no more available. I have it connected to a Gib switch so no issues about speeds internally. And I only have 3 things with Gib nic's in them anyway.
Looking at the TP LINK TD-W9980 just now, £71 from Dabs at the mo, bit more than I have spare but necessity is the mother of invention as they say.

Re: Is this worth buying?

if you like the one you've got you could just get a direct replacement
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/16234-thomson-tg589vn/#Content and its only a few quid more than that pc bundle but a deal cheaper than the tplink Smiley
